AN ABERYSTWYTH-BORN graphic designer has teamed up with a local drone pilot to give a remarkable insight into life on the Iron Age Pen Dinas.

Robert Gapper, 38, who is also an amateur historian and archaeologist, and drone pilot Bryn Raw-Rees, both of whom went to school in Aberaeron, have bigger plans to use virtual reality technology to show “8,000 years of Aberystwyth”.

Speaking to the Cambrian News, Robert said he and Bryn had been working on visualising life on Pen Dinas (see video below) when he discovered the work of a community group which has been busy trying to learn more about the history of the ancient hill fort.

He said: “I had started the work and didn’t realise there was a community — the Penparcau History and Heritage Group — and we hadn’t known about each other and the work we were each doing.

“An upcoming geophysical survey should allow us to see markings on the land such as post holes, houses and other dwellings, and incorporate these into a visualisation.”

Robert, who now lives in Somerset, added: “You can see Pen Dinas from any point in Aberystwyth — it is quite a powerful thing on the landscape and I have always been intrigued by it.

“We are trying to accurately portray life on Pen Dinas, and we will hopefully be working on a project which encompasses the whole of Aberystwyth in one experience.”
