Mr Oliver fears a police state (Views, 1 October), which is why I regret voting to leave the EU. The writing was on the wall when the campaigning methods of Vote Leave were revealed in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
The contempt for ethics and the law displayed by Johnson and Cummings has been replicated in government, not least by current consideration to offshore asylum seekers to remote island detention centres.
The recent Channel 5 profile of T E Lawrence illustrated how the Allies carved up the Middle East after World War One, without any regard to ethnic grouping, motivated by commercial interests, particularly oil.
The resultant social tensions exist to this day, and is a central cause of asylum seekers. We created the mayhem, and now, true to form, we would sweep it under the carpet on distant, remote islands.
No wonder that T E Lawrence refused his knighthood, and what a contrast to our current ministers, not one of whom has the integrity to be held accountable for their failings.
