Madam,

On Sunday, 11 November, I attended the laying of the wreaths ceremony at Lampeter war memorial.

It was a busy event with many organisations putting their wreaths on the war memorial.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday event was particularly special as it fell on 11 November, and it marked 100 years since the Great War of 1914-1918 ended.

I reflected on the people who had given everything, including their life, so that I and other citizens who came later could live in a free country; and this made me feel incredibly thankful and grateful to those who gave their lives.

Later on, after the crowds began to disperse, I was able to have a closer look at the names written on the war memorial in Lampeter. Sadly on the left side of Lampeter war memorial the names had become very faint and hard to read.

I think this was because of the weather taking a toll, wearing away the surface of the war memorial.

I think heavy rain and hail and wind over many years have worn and eroded away the left side of war memorial making it hard to read the names of the brave servicemen and women who gave their lives for their country.

I would like Ceredigion County Council to pay workmen and monument specialists to repair Lampeter war memorial so that the names of the fallen men and women can be read again.

It is very important that we fully remember those people who gave their lives for our country, and so I hereby call upon the authorities at Ceredigion council to send out council workers to examine our war memorials all across Ceredigion from Borth to Cardigan and all the smaller towns and villages inbetween, and to see if the memorials need repair and servicing.

Where the names of our brave fellow countrymen and women can no longer be read, because of erosion and wear from the weather, then I call upon the council to employ whatever specialist stoneworkers and craftsmen are needed in order to rewrite the names of the fallen back onto the memorials.

We must remember the names of our fellow countrymen and women who gave their lives for peace and freedom.

Yours etc,

Jamie Davies, 32 Maes y Felin, Lampeter.
