Welsh music legend Meic Stevens will not perform at this weekend’s Sesiwn Fawr following comments he made at a Caernarfon concert.
The 77-year-old Pembrokeshire singer-songwriter was accused of making racist comments during a gig at G?yl Arall on Sunday.
At the gig, Stevens is reported to have said there were "only a handful of white people" on his granddaughter’s school bus in Cardiff, before adding “they’ll be in Caernarfon soon”.
Stevens admitted he made an observation about his granddaughter’s school bus, but strenuously denied any racist intent, adding: "I’m not against Muslims at all.”
Organisers of Sesiwn Fawr, a three-day music festival that takes place in Dolgellau this weekend, issued a statement today saying that Stevens would not be appearing.
He was due to play at the Ship Hotel on Friday evening.
In a statement, Sesiwn Fawr organisers said: “Meic Stevens will not be appearing at this year’s Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau.
“The programme and timings will be adjusted accordingly.
“As no members of our organising committee were present at Gwyl Arall last weekend we do no feel that we can make any comments regarding events there involving the singer.
“There are over 70 different artists appearing on Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau’s stages this year and for the third year running all tickets have been sold well in advance.”
