An Aberystwyth man has spoken of his dismay after leaving a restaurant review online in Welsh - and being sent a reply in Swedish.

Sion Meredith left a review on TripAdvisor after visiting the Whitehall restaurant in Pwllheli on Monday, 23 December.

He wrote a review in Welsh, praising the restaurant’s food and service, but the site did not recognise the language.

Sion said: “I wrote a review in Welsh about the restaurant and received a response from TripAdvisor in a language I didn’t recognise.

“After using Google Translate, I discovered that it was in Swedish.

“I could have written a piece in English, but I wanted to exercise my right to write in Welsh. It is a language which should be used in every walk of life, including on TripAdvisor.”

Mr Meredith contacted TripAdvisor and was told that they would pass his feedback onto the site’s engineers.

A spokesperson for TripAdvisor said the site was unable to host reviews in Welsh.

The spokesperson said: “TripAdvisor currently operates in 49 markets and 28 languages worldwide. While we are not currently able to host reviews written in Welsh, we are continuously exploring opportunities to expand the number of languages we are able to support on our sites.

“In order to maintain the integrity of our site, we ensure that every language in which we operate is fully integrated into our moderation and fraud detection tools and processes.

“For this reason, we are not currently able to host reviews written in all of the world’s languages, but as the world’s largest travel site we are constantly exploring opportunities to extend support to additional languages worldwide.”
