Madam,
In the Cambrian News of 28 June, Patrick O’Brien in his Comment under the heading ‘Huge dangers to rural Wales’ mentions exports but says nothing about the future of imports.
Food production in Wales is so poor that we have to import 70 per cent to 75 per cent of our food, including fruit and vegetables.
The bulk of these imports must come from Europe which means that when we leave the EU nearly all our food will become more expensive.
In Wales we currently have thousands of people who cannot afford food at today’s prices and rely on voluntary foodbanks.
When food prices do increase it is possible that the generous people who supply the banks at present may no longer be able to do so and the voluntary network will collapse.
The consequences would affect the whole of Wales - not only the rural areas.
Yours etc,
A R Thomas, Park Avenue, Cardigan.
