Madam,

The exhibition Petticoats of Power at Llanerchaeron is highlighting the women who worked there but there seems to be an omission, in what I have read so far, in as much as no mention has been made of the housekeepers who worked there.

Someone had to keep the house clean – dusting, polishing, sweeping, warm-cleaning the grates, fetching kindling and coal to make the fires, and to attend to the catering.

My best friend was the housekeeper at Llanerchaeron for the best part of 40 years and, in addition to looking after the mansion, she raised her two boys, with her husband (who worked on the estate).

I have spent many happy hours listening to her recount her duties over the years and can only marvel at her dedication to the job and the hours spent on ensuring the smooth running of the mansion. Truly an unsung hero.

Yours etc,
