MEMBERS of Llanwenog WI celebrated the branch’s 70th anniversary by serving afternoon tea in Llanwenog Church to invited guests from WIs around the area.
The Côr Lleisiau’r Werin, conducted by Elonwy Davies, displayed fabulous harmonies while Susie, the very talented vicar, played her harp at the start of the afternoon and again while everyone had their tea.
Afternoon tea was served in Eglwys Fach and, as always, Llanwenog WI ladies did themselves proud – it was quite a spread.
A huge thanks was given to Christine, the branch president. It is thanks to her that everything went so smoothly, members said.
They had a special memorabilia corner showing photographs through the decades, and information on the designing and making of the centenary panel and cloth.
Monday, 16 October, was the group’s actual birthday from the first meeting in 1947. They celebrated this special day with afternoon tea at the Mustard Seed where the food just kept coming and coming; they really made it a day to remember. Members gave thanks to all the staff.
They then gave Christine a huge bouquet of flowers as thanks for all her organisation, and because none of the celebrations could happen without the help of all the members, every member was given a surprise gift of a commemorative bag
The October meeting was spent finalising arrangements for the anniversary. After the business was concluded, the guest speaker, Justine Burgess of West Wales Willow, was introduced.
Justine told them how she and her husband had started the business and how the willow was prepared ready for weaving.
Justine had brought with her some examples of her work including a Spanish basket called a Zarzo. Then it was the members’ turn.
After being shown how to use the shape of the rods, they made woven circles, mixing the variety of colours. Then they decorated them with the ribbons and material Justine had supplied.
It was great fun with lots of concentration required, but also laughter to give a sense of achievement in a short space of time.
The next meeting is on 2 November at 7.30pm in Llanwenog Church. This will be the AGM, but all are still welcome.
