Madam,
I find it incomprehensible that Trevor Warner, in his letter published 2 June, so completely missed the point that I made in my letter (26 May). At no point did I raise the question of the feasibility of travelling to Europe in a post-Brexit situation. The point I made related to the morality of people deciding to vote for Brexit one day and then swanning off to one of the Greek Islands the next – ie want-ing to enjoy what Europe has to offer but not being willing, in any shape or form, to play a part in resolving its problems.
What irks me is the inward-looking, narrow-minded stance of Brexit supporters. I recently visited London and most of the staff at our hotel came from EU countries. They spoke excellent English and were very efficient. It is patently obvious that the jobs they had were open to all applicants but, for whatever reasons, did not appeal to local people. Without migrants from Europe the tourism industry would grind to a halt. The same is true for hotels in places such as Dolgellau. People from Europe have come to Dolgellau, have established flourishing businesses and have contributed in a significant manner to the local and national economy. Long may they continue to do so.
Yours etc
Dwyryd Williams
Dolgellau.
