A COMMUNITY woodland near Pontrhydfendigaid is one of 101 community-managed green spaces in Wales which have met the high standard needed to receive the prestigious Green Flag Community Award.

The flag will be flying at Coed y Bont in recognition of its excellent facilities and commitment to delivering great quality green space.

The National Wool Museum in Drefach Felindre also scooped a Green Flag Award from Keep Wales Tidy. And Ysgol Syr John Rhys, Ponterwyd, and Ysgol Comins Coch got Green Flags.

Coed y Bont is the only site in Ceredigion that is currently in receipt of the Green Flag Community Award. The 60-acre area of mixed woodland lies on the edge of Pontrhydfendigaid on the road that leads to Strata Florida Abbey.

Underpinned by a management agreement with Natural Resources Wales, a group of local volunteers has worked tirelessly over the past few years to develop this woodland into one that is for the benefit and use of the local community.

Chris Harris, Coed y Bont chairman, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this award. It is well-deserved recognition of all the hard work undertaken by dedicated volunteers to make Coed y Bont into a community woodland where everyone can enjoy the woodland and its wildlife. It reflects the considerable commitments they have made to turn this woodland into such a lovely and accessible place to visit.”
