Work on a new multi-million-pound transport interchange at Bow Street will get underway at the start of next month, the Cambrian News can reveal.
Transport for Wales has confirmed that work will be starting on the weekend of 2 November.
The initial work will involve laying new tracks and banking so that it is all level for trains to and from Aberystwyth to stop at the station.
Cllr Paul Hinge, the driving force behind the scheme, said it was fantastic news.
“At long last,” he said. ”I am absolutely delighted that work is finally going to start on the project. We now look forward to the scheme progressing at some pace.”
The interchange will include railway platforms, car parks, bus stops and cycle racks.
Cllr Hinge said the interchange, which should be up and running by March 2020, was well worth the £7.95m price tag.
“I personally think it is money well spent,” he said. “Aberystwyth is a very different place to when the town’s railway station was first built. For starters there is a huge problem with parking in town now. Here we will have plenty of parking space.”
And he added: “New infrastructure like this will help the local economy as it grows and will be a great asset when the new innovation centre at IBERS opens.”
