An island off the Llyn Peninsula is to become the world’s first blue energy island, meaning it will be powered entirely by waves.

The project on Ynys Enlli, led by Nova Innovation, could lead to the creation of jobs and give businesses an opportunity to get involved.

Nova Innovation has received a Welsh Government grant of £1.2 million to move forward with plans for the tidal power project.

The energy will be generated by placing turbines in the current between the island and the mainland Llyn Peninsula. The turbines will be completely hidden beneath the sea.

Cllr Gareth Roberts, who represents Aberdaron, is supportive of the project.

He said: “We have a unique area here on the Llyn. The sea is clean, there is little pollution and it is important for animals such as dolphins and seals.

“We need to ensure that these are protected, but I have to say it’s very exciting.

“What we don’t want is huge pylons coming down the Llyn to collect the energy as it is created by the sea."

He added: “I would like to explore the possibility of the community owning, or part owning, one of the turbines so there is an income to benefit local people too.

“I’ve nothing against the project, but it would be good for locals to get a slice of the cake too.

“There is the potential of jobs through maintenance and installation of the project, which would be good for the area.”

A spokesperson for Nova Innovation said: “Throughout the engineering design and consenting process, Nova will be working to make sure the local community and stakeholders have the chance to get involved and have a say in the project, and that opportunities for maximising community benefits are fully explored.

“Nova is also keen to explore ways in which local businesses can be involved in the Enlli project, using the expertise and experience in the local area to provide services to support the development.”
