An 11-year-old schoolboy metal detectorist came to the rescue when a resident of Cross Inn, near Llanon, lost his ring while gardening.

Jan Mura was distraught to find that the ring, described as being of great sentimental value, was missing after a hard day’s toil in the garden.

Jan and his wife, Lyn, stayed up well into the night searching with a torch, but all to no avail.

Mr Mura’s Facebook appeal to ‘any local metal detectorists’ was spotted by Jonathon Holder, owner of a Welsh antiques shop at Cross Inn, who asked his son, Llion, a pupil of Ysgol Bro Sion Cwilt, to help – and he found it.

“Llion has been metal detecting since Christmas when he received a Garrett 100 detector as a present,” explained mum Yvonne.

“He loves the hobby and the connection to history it brings. His best historical find is an early lead musket ball.

"I drove Llion and his little brother Gwesyn, who likes to help dig the finds for Llion, to Mr Mura’s house where he was very pleased to see us.

“After just a few minutes at the third location in the garden, Llion’s detector sounded and the ring was found amongst the grass and straw."
