THE Queen’s Baton Relay for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia will visit Llanidloes, Llandinam and Rhayader next month.

The relay began its journey from Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day on 13 March, and will visit more than a third of the world’s population, covering 230,000km in 388 days.

On 4 September, the baton will arrive in Wales, with visits to Powys on Thursday, 7 September.

After starting in Brecon in the early morning, the relay’s next stop will by Rhayader between 10.50am and 11.50am where the baton will “take part in a colourful and energetic street procession” involving around 300 children from local schools in themed dress, all linked to the Commonwealth Games or local area.

The baton will then stop off at Llanidloes High School and Primary School between 12.10pm and 1.10pm, welcomed at the high school with a trumpet fanfare and joint choir from the schools.

The welcome will be followed by celebrations on the primary school grounds where pupils take the shape of a map of Wales.

The baton will be taken symbolically around the map before departing for its next location.

It will arrive in Llandinam for a brief stop off between 1.20pm and 1.30pm at the David Davies statue to coincide with Visit Wales’ Year of Legends campaign.

Baton-bearers for the visits have yet to be announced.
