ANDY Davies and co-driver Michael Gilbey took overall honours on Lampeter and District MC’s Rali Bro Caron, sponsored by Arfon Griffiths Carpentry and Windy Corner Coaches, the second round of the Welsh Road Rally Championship.
Held over 95 miles on OS map 146, the rally had a capacity entry of 90 cars and a reserve list for the ever-popular event.
The first car away was Kevin Davies and Alan James in a Mk2 Escort, cogging up the gears over the hills of Mynydd Llanybydder - but leading the rally at the halfway petrol halt in Llandovery was Rhodri Evans and Max Freeman also in an Escort.
They had a lead of 56 seconds over the Subaru Impreza of Llanarth driver Andy Davies, with Michael Gilbey co-driving, with Davies and James in lying in third position, another 20 seconds adrift.
Things took a turn for the worse just into the second half for Evans and Freeman as the Escort Mk2 left the road on black ice, sending the car into a roll and ultimately ending the rally for the leading pair.
Back at the finish at Lampeter RFC, with the results final at 6.10am, the overall winning crew was the Subaru of Andy Davies and Michael Gilbey, having extended their advantage over Kevin Davies in his Escort to 34 seconds, after a tough and challenging event.Third overall was Simon Summers and Dilwyn John in another Escort, a further 17 seconds down. Mark ‘GT’ Roberts and Dylan Jenkins were fourth in a VW Golf, from Einion Williams and Rhodri Evans in a Escort.
James Davies and George Eadon were sixth overall in a Proton Compact GTi, with Telor Pugh and Ian Beamond seventh in a Seat Ibiza, and Matt Barker and John Connor eighth in a Peugeot 206 GTi.
Gari Evans and Arfon Griffiths achieved ninth overall in a Ford Escort and Paul Morgan and Rhys Griffiths completed the top 10 finishers in a Honda Civic Type R.
In the Class One Masters, Kevin Davies picked up the Dalton’s ATV Cup for as first driver, and Alan James received the Perris Garage Cup for first navigator.
The Class Two Experts class saw Einion Williams win the CP Electrics Cup for first driver, and Rhodri Evans won the Brondeifi Garage Cup for first co-driver.
In the Class Three Semi-Experts, Rob Stephens won the Melvyn Evans Motorsport Cup and co-driver Nathan Summers the Nant y Caws Filling Station Cup.
In the Class Four Novices, Rhys Davies won the Dai Mechanic Cup and co-driver Llyr Davies the E&M Motor Factors Cup.
The Highest Placed Mixed Crew honours meanwhile went to Brian Jones, who picked up the Andy Davies Rallying Cup and co-driver Kate Jones, who was awarded the Wyn Thomas Heating Cup.
In the highest placed Under 1400cc car, in a Peugeot 205 XS, William Carlyle picked up the DR Davies Minimix Cup, and co-driver Matt Hill won the Ivor Thomas & Sons Car Dismantlers Cup.
The highest-placed Lampeter and District MC crew, and winning the Gary Jones Motorsport Photography Trophy was Lee ‘Eggs’ Plant and co-driver Michael Phillips in a Mitsubishi Colt.
