A TALENTED young sailor from Ceredigion has recently been selected for the prestigious British Sailing Youth Team following an outstanding summer that included an impressive performance at the ILCA National Championships in July and a valuable debut on the world stage at the ILCA 6 Youth World Championships in Denmark this August.
Steffan Williams, 17, from New Quay and a sixth form pupil at Ysgol Bro Teifi, recently returned from his first-ever international competition, where he raced against some of the world's best youth sailors in the highly competitive ILCA 6 fleet, a single-handed dinghy class that forms a key pathway towards Olympic sailing.
Competing over six days of racing, the young Welsh sailor gained invaluable experience while proudly representing Wales and the UK among a field of more than 300 competitors from across the globe.
One of Steffan's standout moments came during a qualifying race when he rounded the windward mark in second place before going on to finish fifth, his best result of the championship.
Reflecting on the racing at the World Championship, he said: “My highlight of the week was rounding the windward mark in second place during one of the qualifying races and looking back and seeing the rest of the world fleet.
“It was a pretty incredible feeling and definitely a moment I'll never forget. To finish fifth in that race was a huge confidence boost and showed me that I can compete at this level.”
The ILCA6 Youth World Championships were the latest milestone in a sailing journey that began on the waters of Cardigan Bay. Earlier this summer, Steffan caught the attention of British Sailing selectors with an impressive showing at the ILCA National Championships, where the UK's most promising youth sailors compete for places within the national pathway programme.

Following confirmation of his selection this week, Steffan said: “It's a real honour to be selected for the British Sailing Youth Team.
“his has been one of my goals for a long time and it's the result of a lot of hard work on and off the water.
“The experience in Denmark was amazing and has motivated me even more to keep improving and pushing myself.”
His performances have now been rewarded with selection to the British Sailing Youth ILCA 6 Team, an important step on the pathway towards elite and Olympic sailing.
The programme brings together some of the UK's most talented young athletes, providing access to world-class coaching, training camps and international competition opportunities.

Away from competing and studying for his A-levels, Steffan is helping inspire the next generation of sailors through his roles as a member of New Quay Yacht Club and a dinghy instructor at Cardigan Bay Watersports Centre.
He added: "I'm passionate about helping the next generation discover a love of sailing and the sea.
eeing young people build confidence on the water and achieve things they never thought possible is incredibly rewarding, so to represent Wales and GBR on the world stage and then bring those experiences back to inspire future sailors makes this achievement even more special."
