AFTER a league programme in which the destination of the title never looked certain, Aberystwyth Firsts sealed the Rachel’s West Wales Conference Championship by cruising to an eight wicket win over their second team.
Batting first, Aberystwyth Seconds could only manage 13 for 9 before the overs ran out, with top scorer Ceri John (49) just missing out on what would have been a well deserved half century.
Leg spinner Rowan Dunbabbin did most of the damage when taking for 4 16.
The response by Aberystwyth Firsts was a decisive one, and they passed the winning post with 134 for 2, for the loss of only two wickets, to secure the title.
Iestyn Evans scored a quick fire 52 not out, with Anthony Burrell contributing an unbeaten 47.
Aberystwyth University Commoners kept up their efforts as the main challengers for the league title throughout the season until the last game, and easily overcame Aberaeron by 110 runs.
Put into bat after losing the toss, Commoners scored 203 for 5, with the bulk of the runs coming from Neil Stent (81) and Ian Lawton (61 not out).
Paul Hughes led the Aberaeron bowling with 2 for 28, while John Evans chipped in with 2 for 31.
The Aberaeron reply never got going, and they were all back in the pavilion when dismissed for just 93 runs. Steffan Rees top scored with 40.
Ian Lawton took 4 for 13 while Rakesh Bhatia and Dave Wilocoxson took a couple of wickets each.
Half a dozen boundaries by Phil Leeds in his 72 not out were the mainstay of Dolgellau’s 172 for 6 against visitors Talybont.
He received good support from Greg Smithies (17), Dave Jenkins (17) and Callum Taylor (15)
Robin Woodford produced the best bowling figures for Talybont with 3 for 46, but the batting reply fell 34 run short of a winning total on 138 - despite the efforts of Josh Glasbey (54) and Philip Abrahams (33).
Phil Leeds was again the main man with figures of 4 for 8, while Sam Williams claimed 3 for 25.
The match between Tregaron was called off because Tregaron failed to raise a team.
