DOLGELLAU are waiting for their first away win of the season in the North Wales League division one after they were dismissed for 87 in 35.5 overs, having decided to bat first in hot conditions at Marchwiel last weekend. It took the hosts just 11.2 overs to canter to a nine wicket victory with 91 for 1.
The star of the match was 15 year-old Wales international, Roman Walker, who came in at 5 for 1, and blasted 50 not out from just 28 balls, with 2 sixes and 8 fours.
Earlier, Walker bowled 7 overs of pace, conceding just 5 runs in taking 2 wickets.
On a hard, fast track, Marchwiel’s opening bowlers Walker and Anthony Morris did some good work early on as they restricted the scoring of runs. Dolgellau lost their first wicket when Gareth Lanagan’s attempted hook shot spooned up to Mitchell Davies, from Walker’s bowling.
Fellow opener Sion Francis went for 10 when he was bowled by Morris, and when Mark Edmondson fell, caught at short fine leg by Gareth Evans off the bowling of Walker, it was 16 for 3 from 11 overs.
Phil Leeds and Stuart Evans managed to produce a partnership of 33 for the 4th wicket, until Leeds chased a wide delivery from Nathan Matthews and ended up snicking it to keeper George Forgrave - Leeds top scoring for his team with 20.
Evans stayed until the total reached 67 before he too was on his way, bowled by Matthews for 13; 65 for 5 in 24 overs.
Of the remaining batsmen, only Sam Williams with 14 made it to double figures, Williams doing well as he stuck it out for 46 deliveries. Richard Rees was on 5 not out when Dolgellau’s stay at the crease ended on a lowly 87. Matthews claimed 3 for 21 from 10 overs to go with Walker’s excellent 2 for 5 from his 7 overs. Morris had 1 for 23, Sion Edwards 1 for 30 and Josh Williams 1 for 0 from 5 balls.
After the interval, bowlers Edmondson and Francis extracted plenty of life from the wicket, Edmondson holding a smart catch at slip to dismiss Morris at 5 in the second over off the bowling of Francis.
That was as good as it got for Dolgellau, however, as No 3 Roman Walker smashed the ball to all parts of the ground, and in tandem with opener Mike Forgrave added an unbeaten 86 runs for the second wicket to see his side home in 11.2 overs.
Walker hit 10 boundaries in all, including 2 sixes and 8 fours, finishing on 50 not out from 28 balls. Forgrave remained with him on 29 not out, including 3 fours.
The beleaguered Dolgellau bowlers were Francis, with 1 for 28 from 4 overs, Edmondson 0 for 36 off 5.2 and Leeds 0 for 18 from 2, as Marchwiel and Wrexham won by 9 wickets, taking 14 points.
Dolgellau will again be missing squad members, who will be going to watch the Wales national football team play in the European 2016 Championships in France, when they entertain second-placed side Bersham in division one on Saturday.
