Llanrwst (155) beat Dolgellau (88) by 67 runs
DOLGELLAU fell to their fifth successive defeat when they travelled to face Llanrwst in the North Wales division one.
Llanrwst, asked to bat first, totalled 155 in 43.1 overs, but that was enough to see off the visitors, who could only muster 88 in 25.3 overs, to lose out by 67 runs.
Once again Dolgellau were missing key players and the lack of a settled side this season is contributing to the poor results.
The first six Llanrwst batsmen all notched up double figures, whereas only three Dolgellau players managed to do it, with veteran Trefor Williams taking 5 wickets for 29 as the visitors collapsed from 44 for none to 88 all out in 16 overs.
Number five batsman Huw Williams top scored with 36, and indeed that was to be the highest knock of the match.
He hit 2 sixes and a four, before being the ninth wicket to fall, caught by Callum Taylor from the bowling of Greg Smithies.
Trefor Williams made 22 as an opener, riding his luck against the bowling of Robbie Lee, who eventually had him caught by close fielder Gareth Lanagan.
His fellow opener Aron Hughes also made 22, playing some good shots until he was well caught at short mid-wicket by Smithies, the bowler being Sam Williams.
It became 72 for 3, as Nathan Jones was lbw to skipper Phil Leeds for 15 runs.
Home captain Aled Hughes was caught and bowled by Leeds for 12, and Scott Thomas made 12, bowled by Smithies.
Huw Williams saw wickets go down at the other end as he accumulated runs, the later batsman not offering much resistance, with Chris Nicholson 8 not out.
Smithies claimed 3 for 20 from 4 overs, Callum Taylor polished off the innings with 3 for 19 from 4.1 overs. Leeds was his usual economic self, giving away 23 from his 12 overs, with 4 maidens, 2 wickets.
There was a wicket apiece for the unlucky Robbie Lee, with 1 for 25 from 8, and Sam Williams, with 1 for 40 from 10.
Missing regular bowlers, it was a creditable effort to dismiss Llanrwst for 155.
The good work of the bowlers was somewhat wasted however, as the visitors crashed to 88 all out after Gareth Lanagan and Greg Smithies put on 44 in 9 overs.
The batsmen did not cope with good, accurate bowling by Trefor Williams and Scott Thomas, as they shared 8 wickets
Lanagan made 12, adjudged lbw to Thomas, and 2 runs later Smithies was bowled by Williams for his team’s top score of 31 from 32 balls with a six and 2 fours.
From then on wickets tumbled at regular intervals, after Leeds and Robbie Lee had added 16 for the third wicket, with Lee going for 16 with a six and four, to a well judged catch by Alex Evans on the long-off boundary, Williams the bowler.
Number 10 Matthew Maslin hit 2 fours in his 9, but there was little else to speak of as Dolgellau were sent packing for 88.
Trefor Williams’ 5 for 29 from 9 overs and Scott Thomas’ 3 for 24 from 12 excellent overs with 6 maidens were the significant bowling figures for Llanrwst, while Leon Doran had an over taking 1 for 5.
As well as his catch Alex Evans had a run out and there was a catch each for Aled Hughes and Scott Thomas. Llanrwst earned 13 points to Dolgellau’s 2 points.
The match ball sponsor for the game was Young’s Fruit and Veg, Dolgellau.
There is no league action for Dolgellau this weekend, however they travel to Liverpool Competition side Prestatyn on Sunday in round two of the Welsh Cup.
