VISITING Conwy kept their record intact in a clash of two unbeaten teams at the Marian, strolling to victory by 9 wickets against an under-performing Dolgellau.
Opting to bowl first, a good performance by Conwy’s bowlers and fielders restricted Dolgellau to 159 in 48.5 overs.
The visitors comfortably reached a winning 160 in the 34th over, only losing the wicket of Shaun Davies for 58 after he and his captain Raj Britto had opened up with a partnership of 112 in 29 overs.
Britto was also the stand-out bowler when Dolgellau batted, taking three important wickets in mid-innings.
At one time the hosts were struggling on 56 for 5 from 17 overs, Sion Francis was caught by Jonathan Davies off Graham Meredith, Jonathan Lloyd made 14, caught Vaughan Williams bowled Meredith; Phil Leeds adjudged lbw to Britto; Gareth Lanagan held in the slips by Shaun Davies, a second wicket for Britto and opener Stuart Evans caught and bowled by slow bowler Gareth Thomas for 23, which included 5 boundaries.
Sam Williams was joined in the middle by Mark Edmondson and together they added 39 runs in 9 overs, 35 of them attributed to Edmondson, who hit a six and 6 fours in that 35 as he took the attack to the bowlers. However, his 30 ball knock ended when Phil Davies took a good catch, Britto striking for a third time.
Williams continued with Will Hannam, who was having his first game of the season, and they put another 31 on the board before Hannam was bowled by Shaun Davies for 20 from 23 deliveries, 3 fours.
Phil Davies was again in the action running out Marcus Cheyne with a direct hit to leave it at 143 for 8. With the overs diminishing skipper Rob Humphreys was well taken by Evan Williams for 9 off Stan Senior and Sam Williams was the last batsman out, having batted stoically for 25 run, caught Thomas bowled Senior.
Jamie Tomkins was the not out batsman as Dolgellau were all out for an under par score of 159 in the penultimate over, with seven batsmen falling to catches.
Britto excelled taking 3 for 24 from 11 overs, 4 of which were maidens; Meredith claimed 2 for 30 from 12 overs, Thomas 1 for 40 from 7, Shaun Davies 1 for 32 from 12 and Senior 2 for 9 from 2.5 overs. Thereafter it was one-way traffic as openers Britto and Shaun Davies hurried the score along to 112 in 29 overs.
Davies reached a half century from 73 balls, striking 9 fours in his 58, facing 84 deliveries until he was finally caught by keeper Humphreys, Marcus Cheyne being the only wicket taker for Dolgellau.
There was to be no respite for the bowlers as Dan Davies joined Britto in scoring the 48 runs that were needed for victory
They notched up the required runs from just 4 overs, the home side’s players seemingly glad to get off the pitch. Britto hit 7 fours in his undefeated 54, reaching his fifty from 91 balls, while Dan Davies struck 4 boundaries in his 21 not out.
It was generally a bad day at the office for the hosts’ bowlers and fielders as Conwy claimed 14 points to put them at the top of division one, with Dolgellau in third place.
