IT was derby day at the Vicarage Fields as Aberystwyth Firsts beat the University Commoners by 60 runs on Sunday.
Put into bat on a green wicket, Aberystwyth scored a challenging total of 228 for 7 from their 40 overs, with Mark Evans leading the way with a half century.
There was an early breakthrough for the Commoners when opener Andi Price was dismissed without scoring, when he was caught and bowled by Umar Aslam.
Fellow opener Anthony Burrell, however, went on to make 38, and Evans scored 52 to steady the ship for Aber, as no further wickets were lost until the 19th over.
Youngster Zaid Khan (37) and Harri Edwards (25) provided aggression towards the end of the innings, along with injured Sion Lathwood providing a useful 16.
The Commoners’ bowlers found it difficult to find the correct line in the swinging conditions, with Dave Wilcoxson returning 2 for 43 runs from his 7 overs and skipper Jacob Hughes-Pickering 2 for 55 from his 8 overs. Aslam finished with bowling figures of 2 for 53 from 8 overs.
Aberystwyth started promisingly as Neil Stent was stumped for 1 off the bowling of Harri Edwards in bizarre fashion.
Fellow opener Rakesh Bhatia scored quickly in his innings of 46, including 8 fours and a six, before finally being bowled by Lathwood in the 11th over.
Dave Wilcoxon made 17 runs, before he was dismissed lbw from the bowling of Patrick Daniel, who also had Ian Lawton caught by Mark Evans for just 2 runs.
Rowan Dunbabin meanwhile bowled Will Copeland for 17 and had Umar Aslam caught by Anthony Burrell for 13.
The Commoners never really got going following the dismissal of Bhatia, with only captain Jacob Hughes-Pickering and Richard Lucas providing any resistance as the hosts fell behind the run rate.
Hughes-Pickering was caught behind by Robert Rudge off the bowling of Sion Lathwood for 33, including 2 fours and a six, and Andi Price bowled Lucas for 24, with 4 fours, before also dismissing Jan Ruzika lbw for 9, having hit 2 fours.
Commoners were eventually bowled out in the 38th over for 169, with Patrick Daniel returning 2 wickets for 40, Sion Lathwood 3 wickets for 26, Rowan Dunbabin 2 wickets for 36, Andi Price 2 for 12 and Harri Edwards 1 for 26.
Tregaron (130) beat Tywyn (84) by 46 runs
TREGARON took to the field for the first time this season in the West Wales Conference and they beat visitors Tywyn by 46 runs.
Tywyn won the toss and asked Tregaron to bat first, and opening bowlers Jack Morris and Chris Taylor bowled well in their first spell, with Morris taking 2 for 9 in his five overs to leave Tregaron on 30 for 2 after 10.
This quickly became 50 for 5 after 15 overs when Jack Brogan (25) was bowled by Dave Jenkins, and Llion Jones departed when dismissed lbw in the same over.
This brought youngster Liam Jones to the wicket, and together with Alun Hughes, the score was moved on to 89, when Hughes (27) was bowled by Jack Morris in the 27th over.
Liam Jones went on to contribute 11 runs and together with Rhodri Morgans (15) and Rhydian Evans (11) Tregaron’s total reached 130 all out in their final over.
Dave Jenkins returned 4 wickets for 48 for Tywyn, Jack Morris took 3 for 10, and Ted Hughes 2 for 15.
Tywyn’s reply started well with Jack Harris (35) scoring freely until he was caught off the bowling of Rhydian Evans, to make the score on 44 for 2 in the eighth over.
Jack Brogan and Llyr Hughes then came on to bowl their allotted 9 overs, Brogan taking 3 for 12, and Hughes 2 for 16, to effectively end Tywyn’s run chase
The innings finished on 84 all out when Rhydian Evans, 3 for 36, took Tywyn’s last wicket, when well caught by Ryan Jones in the slips.
