Aberystwyth Seconds (154) lost to Tywyn & District CC (155 for 7)

THE cricket match between Aberystwyth Seconds and Tywyn, re-scheduled to accommodate the Welsh Cup tie at the Geufron on Sunday next, seemed doomed to be a victim of the storms on Sunday.

Aberystwyth’s innings, however, started only a few minutes late, having been invited to bat first by the visiting team.

Two early wickets, one each for Richard Rees and James Bradbury-Willis, left the home team in some trouble, but Rob Rudge (54) and Alwyn Davies made a promising recovery, before Davies (9) was caught by the wicket-keeper.

Zaid Khan (36) and Rob Rudge played watchfully, but positively, before ‘keeper Dafydd Williams snapped up Rudge as his second victim. Zaid Khan continued to attack, and he was well supported by Steffan Davies, and took the score to 136 before he was yorked by Callum Taylor.

There followed a mini-collapse and the innings closed in the 39th over when skipper Anthony Evans was caught and bowled by Dave Jenkins for 10. It remained to be seen if Tywyn’s gift of 34 ‘extras’ would work against them.

Callum Taylor’s 4 wickets for 38 was the best bowling return for the visitors.

The Tywyn innings started with a flurry of boundaries, but the introduction of Ted Trewella to the attack brought immediate relief when he bowled Richard Rees for 9 and Emlyn Mainwearing trapped Callum Taylor for a bright 20, all in boundaries.

James Bradbury-Willis (28) and Dave Jenkins repaired the damage with a stand of 49, before Anthony Evans dismissed Bradbury-Willis and Dafydd Williams (5) soon followed, bowled by Zaid Khan.

Jenkins remained steadfast, however, and Jamie Tomkins scored a breezy 20 before giving a catch to give Titus Mathew the first of three quick wickets. At 133 for 7, the Aberystwyth team was in with a chance, but Matthew Maslin, struck three boundaries to take Tywyn close to victory, before Dave Jenkins brought victory in the 37th over. His undefeated 49 proved to be the difference in the end.

For Aberystwyth, Titus Mathew was the main wicket-taker with 3 wickets for 49.

This weekend, Aberystwyth’s first team play Commoners at Vicarage Field, and Sunday sees the Pembrokeshire side, Cresselly CC, as visitors to the Geufron for a Welsh Cup tie, with a 1.30pm start.
