Aberystwyth (199 for 5) beat Tywyn (125 for 8) by 74 runs

Tywyn left the Geufron empty-handed in the Girasol Homes West Wales Cricket Conference on Sunday, after losing to Aberystwyth Firsts by 74 runs in reduced overs match, because of the rain.

Invited to bat in a game that was narrowed to 32 overs per innings, following a downpour, the home side got off to a positive start.

Anthony Burrell’s fine start to the season continued, and he was partnered by Zaid Khan, who was very quick to punish any loose bowling.

The pair passed 50 in the eighth over, and the score had reached 99, before Burrell was caught by wicket keeper Dylan Williams from the bowling of Dave Jenkins for an excellent 44, 7 fours.

Zaid Khan continued scoring heavily and, having struck 8 fours and 3 sixes, was brilliantly caught in front of the sight screen by Ted Hughes for 67 runs, also from the bowling of Jenkins (2 for 34 from his 7 overs).

For some time, the Tywyn bowlers were able to restrict the run rate, before Phil Woodland and Mel Jones began to take control again.

It was the entry of skipper Ted Trewella, however, that boosted the score, after the dismissal of Woodland, when he was caught on the boundary by Jenkins for 15 from James Bradbury-Willis.

In a little over 4 overs, Trewella and Jones took the score from 162 for 4 to 198, before the former fell for 24 (3 fours and a six, a second victim for Bradbury-Willis (2 for 35 from his overs), leaving Mel Jones on 33 not out.

Tywyn’s hopes of reaching the target of 200 were given a fillip by Callum Taylor as he struck four boundaries in the first nine deliveries of the innings, but he spooned a comfortable catch to Omair Syed two balls later, in Tom Williams’ first over for 16.

Another blow followed in Khan’s second over as he dismissed the in-form Bradbury-Willis, well caught at slip by Trewella for nought.

Skipper Jenkins soon followed, bowled by Williams to leave the visitors at 31 for 3 and facing an uphill battle.

Opener Richard Rees, having seemed in no difficulty, top-edged another short delivery from Williams to be well caught by Omar Syed for 29, leaving the Tywyn innings in disarray at 38 for 4.

Dylan Williams and Sam Williams set about repairing the damage, until Williams was run out by a remarkable effort by Zaid Khan.

The ball had been struck just short of the boundary, the batsmen had nearly completed a second run when Khan scored a direct hit on the stumps at the striker’s end to leave him well short.

The rest of the game was mainly in the hands of the younger players as Aber’s youngsters, Ioan Morris, Omair Syed and Dan Graison, were able to bowl without too much pressure.

Morgan Yorke (18) and Joe Williamson (14 not out) both enjoyed fruitful partnerships with Dylan Williams who ended with 25 not out, as Tywyn finished on 125 for 8.

For Aber, Tom Williams’ 3 for 28 from 7 overs was the best and five other bowlers each took a single wicket, including Zhan, Syed, Ioan Morris and Alfie Lawson.
