Llanrwst (137) lost to Dolgellau (210) for 8 by 73 runs
DOLGELLAU’s trip to Llanrwst resulted in a solid 73 run win for the visitors in the North Wales League division one.
On a hot afternoon Dolgellau skipper Rob Humphreys had no hesitation in batting first, on calling the coin correctly.
The visitors had a very good opening partnership of 90 by Jack Williamson and Greg Smithies, who top scored with 50, and that laid the foundation for a total of 210 for 8. Llanrwst responded with 137 all out in 42.2 overs, Mark Edmondson and Phil Leeds taking 3 wickets apiece.
Smithies and Williamson batted together for 31 overs in sweltering conditions against some decent bowling, especially Lee Thomas, who sent down his 12 overs without a break, conceding just 17 runs. Williamson survived some early scares to reach a patient 34 with 3 fours, with Jack Hughes finally trapping him lbw.
At the other end Smithies advanced to his half century from 87 deliveries, hitting 7 fours, with his knock of 50 ending 4 balls later, when he was caught in the covers by the home team’s captain Aron Hughes, to give Callum Jones a wicket.
It was then 106 for 2 with 16 overs remaining, the rest of the batsmen having an opportunity to build on the Smithies, Williamson alliance. They did not disappoint, the next four batsmen in the order all making good contributions as 104 runs were added from those 16 overs.
Jonathan Lloyd and Gareth Lanagan put on 41 for the 3rd wicket, Lloyd striking 3 fours in his 25, Jack Hughes having a second lbw decision in his favour to make it 147 for 3 from 42 overs. Two runs later Lanagan, who made 13, was caught by Berwyn Hughes at square leg off returning opening bowler Huw Williams.
The last 7 overs produced 61 runs, thanks in the main to the hard-hitting Mark Edmondson who struck 37 from 19 balls with 7 fours. Edmondson and Will Hannam shared 30 for the 5th wicket, Hannam hitting the only six of the match in his 12 before he was caught in the deep by Jack Hughes from bowler Leon Doran.
Jamie Tomkins joined Edmondon to take it on to the 200 mark, at which the latter’s quick-fire innings of 37 ended when caught on the boundary, a repeat by Jack Hughes and Doran. There was time for 10 more runs to be scored, as Tomkins was bowled by Huw Williams, while Humphreys was not out and Leeds, in at number eight, run out by Aron Hughes from the last ball of Dolgellau’s innings which finished on 210 for 8, with Sam Williams and Ted Hughes not required to bat.
To go with Lee Thomas’ excellent spell of 12 overs, 5 maidens for 17 runs, there were 2 wickets each for Doran, who returned figures of 2 for 42, Huw Williams 2 for 45 and Jack Hughes 2 for 60; Callum Jones 1 for 37 the other wicket taker.
In reply, the Llanrwst openers Jack Hughes and Callum Jones had a brisk start, scoring 33 from 7 overs. Hughes was bowled by Edmondson in his 4th over before Jones and Aron Hughes added 23 for the second wicket. Jones scored 41 out of the 56 runs on the board but was then caught by Leeds off Edmondson, having hit 5 fours in his 55 ball stay.
It became 82 for 5 at the half way stage of 25 overs, Huw Williams was bowled to give Edmondson a third wicket, Aron Hughes bowled by Leeds for 13 and Carwyn Jones caught by Tomkins off spinner Sam Williams. Two wickets fell with the total on 98, Alex Evans and Joseph Guy both bowled by Leeds. The last three wickets managed to add 39 runs to get 2 points for their side before the innings closed on 137 in the 43rd over.
Number six batsman Aled Hughes was the mainstay in this as he made 29 from 56 deliveries with 3 fours until he was the last to be dismissed caught Leeds bowled Sam Williams. Jack Williamson took 2 wickets, bowling Berwyn Hughes and having Lee Thomas stumped by Humphreys for 9, his 4 overs costing 23 runs.
Leeds claimed 3 wickets for 21 from 12 overs with 5 maidens, Edmondson returned 3 for 36 from 12 and Sam William 2 for 27 from 9.2 overs, while Hannam had 5 overs for 25 runs as Dolgellau won by 73 runs and came home with 13 points and 3rd position in the league table.
