TED Trewella struck a fine half century as Aberystwyth Seconds registered a comfortable six-wicket win over Talybont in the Rachel’s West Wales Conference on Saturday.

On winning the toss, Talybont chose to bat first, but they were dismissed for 143 all out, with Anish Kuriakose top scoring with 38 and Vinod Matthew making 28.

Rowan Dunbabbin took four wickets and Tim Bennett three for the visitors.

In reply, Aber knocked off the runs for the loss of four wickets, with Trewella top scoring with 58, whilst Sam Margrave-Jones made 36 and Dafydd Rees 24.

The Talybont innings, that had started cautiously against the lively opening attack of Tim Bennett and Jamie Holder, was in disarray by the 11th over, by which time the score had fallen to 30 for 4, with three wickets accounted for by Bennett (3 for 26) and one for Holder, all to catches.

There followed the best partnership of the innings, between Anish Kuriakose and skipper Vinod Mathew (28) as they counter-attacked to good effect, taking the score on to 89 in a further 11 overs.

At this point Dafydd Rees snapped up Kuriakose, well caught by Jamie Holder, having struck seven boundaries in his 38.

The introduction of slow bowlers Rowan Dunbabin and Martin Llewelyn brought further success as a series of attacking shots went to hand and were well held. In all, nine catches were held as Dunbabin finished the innings with 4 for 27.

There was late resistance from Philip Abraham (21) though he was the last man to fall, when he was well caught on the boundary by Dafydd Rees.

A total of 143 never looked to be a big enough total to defend, particularly when Aberystwyth’s openers, Ted Trewella and Sam Margrave Jones started so brightly.

The 50 came up in the 11th over and the century stand in the 17th over, at which point Jones played on to Robin Woodford’s bowling for a fine 36 – his first innings of the season. Woodford followed up by bowling Trewella (58) whose innings contained some 10 boundaries.

Iestyn Evans followed next ball and Talybont’s confidence rose accordingly. However, Zaid Ali Khan and Dafydd Rees batted sensibly to bring Aberystwyth to the brink of victory, before Zaid was bowled out by Joshi for 16 runs.

Rees (24 not out) sealed the victory with a six over mid-wicket, the Aberystwyth team’s first of the season, by 6 wickets. Robin Woodford took 3-34 for Talybont.
