ABERYSTWYTH Town manager Neville Powell is looking for his side to build on their first clean sheet of the season in the JD Welsh Premier League when they travel to face Alan Morgan’s Llandudno on Saturday (ko 2.30pm).
A goalless draw against Barry Town last weekend moved the Seasiders off the bottom of the table on goal difference, with their first point at Park Avenue this term, but the Seasiders remain without a win after eight games.
Points are clearly the priority for Powell’s men as they prepare to face a Llandundno side that has lost their last three matches, after making a very promising start to their campaign.
“We want that first win to kick-start us,” said Powell. “Our last three league performances have been good, and we probably deserved to get more than two points from those games.
“It is what it is, the lads have just got to keep believing that we will go on and score goals, and win a match.
“The pleasing thing today is that we kept a clean sheet, and to be honest their keeper Mike Lewis has kept them in it with a couple of saves.
“Declan Walker has hit the post, and on another day, we might have got the three points. But we will take the point and move on to the next game.”
The Seasiders were boosted by the return of John Owen and Malcolm Melvin, as well as Joe Culshaw following his suspension, but Geoff Kellaway was ruled out on Saturday.
Meanwhile local player Cledan Davies has left the Park Avenue club to sign for local rivals Penrhyncoch.
Davies played for Gari Lewis’ side in their Welsh Cup win at Garden Village last Saturday, after following ex-Seasiders Sion James, Antonio Corbisiero and Jonathan Evans to the Cymru Alliance club.
The 27-year-old utility player first joined the Seasiders from Tregaron Turfs in the summer of 2009, and was loaned to Penrhyncoch, before moving on to Carmarthen Town in 2011.
He returned to Aberystwyth a year later after being released from Richmond Park, and also had a spell at Caersws in the summer of 2016.
Davies returned to Park Avenue the following November, and has made 158 Welsh Premier League starts, mostly for Aber, scoring 11 goals.
He had started in Aber’s midweek defeat against Airbus UK Broughton in the Nathaniel MG Cup, but was replaced by Joe Culshaw at half-time and was left out of Saturday’s squad.
"In his first season back at the club, he won Supporters’ Player of the Year, and was an integral part of the side which reached the Welsh Cup Final," said a club statement.
"In 2014/5 he also represented the Black and Greens in the UEFA Europa League, and helped Aber achieve a top four finish with Ian Hughes’ men."Aberystwyth Town would like to thank Cledan for his loyal service and wish him all the best for his future career."ABER MOURN FORMER MANAGER RON CULLUMABERYSTWYTH Town FC has mourned the passing of their former player and manager, Ron Cullum.
Mr Cullum made 64 first team appearances for Aber between 1947-53, scoring four goals, and was appointed as manager for the 1974/5 season.
He led the team to a Central Wales Cup triumph, a second place finish in the Mid Wales League and runners-up in the League Cup of 1975/6, and remained in charge until March 1977.
He was also highly respected in the Aberystwyth area and wider afield for his work with Aberystwyth Athletic Club and Aberystwyth Mini Minors League, which continues to this day.
“In the presence of some of his family members a minute’s silence was observed prior to Tuesday’s match, and Aberystwyth Town FC conveys its sympathies to Granville and Andrew, and their extended families in their sad loss,” said a club spokesman.
