Aberystwyth 0 Flint Town Utd 1
Park Avenue, 16 April
A solitary second half strike was all that separated the two teams as Aberystwyth fell to their second home defeat in phase two.
Having also narrowly lost at Haverfordwest County in midweek, Gavin Allen’s men have failed to pick up a point since the split, after posting much improved results since the JD Cymru Premier restart.
But all three defeats have been by the odd goal with the Seasiders demonstrating grit and a resoluteness that should stand them in good stead.
Manager Allen made a number of changes from Tuesday night, with Connor Roberts returning in goal following suspension, whilst Dan Cockerline and Jamie Reed started in the front line in place of Marc Williams and Jonathan Evans.
Local lad Lee Jenkins took over the captain’s armband for a second time.
After a quiet opening 10 minutes the game sparked into life when Harry Franklin fired wide before young defender Jenkins, at the other end, cleared off the line to deny Flint’s Mark Cadwallader.
The hosts then bossed the next 10 minutes, Cockerline shooting wide before Louis Bradford’s diving header was well gathered by Flint keeper Jon Rushton.
His opposite number, Connor Roberts, then showed his abilities with a couple of impressive saves to foil Joshua Amis and then Callum Bratley, while Mathew Jones put in a strong challenge to thwart another Flint attack.
Honours even at the break and there was little between the teams after the turnaround with the Black and Greens starting brightly, Jenkins flashing a header wide Jamie Reed and Jon Owen linking well in attack without producing an end product.
Flint’s first real opportunity of the half came on 68 minutes when Ben Maher drilled a free kick over the bar and the Silkmen nudged ahead five minutes later.
The visitors’ captain Richie Foulkes got his head to a free-kick under pressure from Jenkins, before Amis ran on to a through ball to fire past Roberts.
Credit to Aber they didn’t let their heads drop and pushed to get back on level terms as soon as possible.
Franklin almost got on the end of a Jamie Reed flick, whilst Jonathan Evans had a shot saved by Rushton following Aber appeals for a penalty.
Franklin then fired a 20-yarder past the post and Jenkins nearly latched on to a Jack Rimmer cross, but Flint held on to secure the spoils.
As the games come thick and fast, the Seasiders' next encounter is a trip to The Rock to face Cefn Druids on Tuesday night.
