ABERYSTWYTH Town Ladies lifted the Central Wales Women’s Cup for the fifth successive season when they beat Llanfair United Ladies 2-1 in a keenly-contested final at Victoria Avenue in Llanidloes on Friday night.

A late goal from Tania Wylde secured the silverware, but the Seasiders were forced to work very hard in the closing stages to keep their lively opponents out.

Aberystwyth had made the perfect start when on seven minutes Mared Jones’ corner fell to Lucy Hughes, who whipped a powerful cross and it took a deflection into the goal.

Further chances fell to Tania Wylde and Helen Evans, but Llanfair held out and they levelled matters after 27 minutes, with a good effort from Gemma Jones.

In response, Aber’s Lucy Hughes put another great cross into the box, but Ffiona Evans was unable to get enough power to put the ball away just before half time.

After the break, Wylde played the ball into Ffion Wyn Roberts for a one on one, but the keeper made a superb save, and Helen Evans also went very close when she volleyed the ball back towards the Llanfair goal straight from their goal kick.

With just 15 minutes remaining, however, Aber made the breakthrough when the ball fell kindly to Wylde following a defensive clearance, and she powered home through the defence and beyond the keeper to make it 2-1 to the Seasiders.

Helen Evans’ shot brushed the crossbar for Aber, but at the other end keeper Katie Christopher had to make a superb save to prevent the game from going into extra time as the Ceredigion side held on to claim the Central Wales silverware again.
