ABERYSTWYTH Town hope to give their home supporters something to cheer about when they turn their attention to facing Ruthin Town in the JD Welsh Cup at Park Avenue on Saturday (2.30pm).

The Seasiders have not won at home since their league opener against Carmarthen Town back in August - and after their 3-1 home defeat to Cefn Druids last Friday evening, manager Matthew Bishop will be keen to avoid a potential Welsh Cup shock.

Ruthin are placed 11th in the second tier JD Cymru North, and the fixture offers Aber a chance to revive their fortunes, after three straight league losses and a Nathaniel Cup semi-final defeat.

After a good run to the last four of that competition, the Aber management will be hoping that extended interest in the Welsh Cup could serve as a welcome boost.

Assistant manger Gavin Allen, however, warned that his side must improve their defensive discipline after they leaked a couple of soft goals against Cefn Druids.

“We made too many mistakes,” admitted Allen. “The second goal was Mickey Mouse football, and if we are going to concede goals like that, we’ll never win games.

“Looking at the recent results, there’s a lack of confidence. I don’t think Cefn Druids beat us on the night, we have beaten ourselves. It’s getting too frequent from us, we are giving away silly goals, and silly mistakes are costing us the game.”

After successive league defeats to Bala Town, The New Saints and Cefn Druids, which has seen them concede 10 goals, the Seasiders remain ninth in the table.

With six games to go until the league split, they are now eight points adrift of the sixth-placed Druids, with just three wins from 16 league matches this season.

The Welsh Cup, however, offers a welcome distraction, and Aber’s management will look for a positive response to kick-start their campaign.

Allen said: “We’ve got Ruthin at home in the Cup on Saturday, and I’m sure that they’ll fancy their chances of beating us, I really do.

“We are looking for characters to stand up in our team, we’ve shown that we can do it, so we’ll look forward to training on Tuesday and then we’ll go again on Saturday.”

The Seasiders then face two tricky pre-Christmas matches, away at Cardiff Met on Saturday, 14 December and at home to high-flying Barry Town the following Friday.

Aber’s supporters can then look forward to a festive double header against mid Wales rivals Newtown - at Latham Park on Boxing Day, and at home on 30 December.

Meanwhile Bari Morgan’s talented Under 19s squad continued their defence of the Welsh Premier Development League South title with a 3-0 win at home to Llanelli.

On Sunday the Seasiders welcome Carmarthen Town Under 19s to Park Avenue.
