ABERYSTWYTH Town kept up their 100 per cent pre-season record with a hard-fought 2-0 win at Penrhyncoch thanks to goals from ex-Rooster Jonathan Evans and Kostya Georgievsky.
Evans turned the tables on his old pals when keeper Leigh Jenkins was beaten by his swerving strike on the half hour.
Playing down the slope after the break, Penrhyn came much more into the game, but the Black and Greens got a second goal late on when Jenkins failed to deal with a free kick and Georgievsky nipped in to score.
As Matthew Bishop’s squad continues to impress ahead of the start of the Dafabet Welsh Premier League, Penrhyn boss Gary Lewis also chose to take the positives despite slipping to their third friendly defeat in four outings
“It was a good, competitive friendly, it got a bit feisty in the second half, but this is what you want,” he said.
“We’ve got Knighton Town in the Summer Cup on Saturday, and we’re expecting that to be another competitive game which will test us before our first league game against Caernarfon, who have also had some good friendlies against top Welsh Premier opposition.
“I have no qualms about the result, but I was really pleased with our commitment and the way we kept our shape.
“Aber had a lot of possession in the first half, but we defended well.
“We gave them a bit of a scrap in the second half. Although we did not really open them up in open play, we had a few opportunities from set plays and corners.”
Aber kicked off with new signings Dom Richards and Kurtis March making starts and they dominated possession for virtually the whole of the first half, but they were denied space in the final third by a well-drilled Penrhyncoch side.
Evans fired high and wide early on before Geoff Kellaway’s teasing cross failed to meet any of the onrushing Seasiders.
Aber’s Will Bell headed a March corner over before they finally grabbed the opener as Evans’ swerved effort from the right deceived Jenkins.
Aber continued to press as trialist striker Lewis Coyle headed over for Town, before the Roosters tested Richards into a fine save through Jon Foligno’s headed effort.
After the break, Penrhyn found their groove as Aber made seven substitutions.
Sion James forced another save from Richards with a powerful header before new Aber signing Carl Lamb saw his shot deflected to safety.
Penrhyn continued to threaten as the game wore on, with Gareth Mansell firing just wide and Antonio Corbisiero’s audacious volley going just over.
But Aber survived the onslaught and in the 89th minute doubled their lead as Georgievsky finished from close range after Jenkins’ error.
Aberystwyth are next in action at Afan Lido on Friday night (7.30pm ko) while Lewis hopes to add a young striker to his squad ahead of Penrhyncoch’s Summer Cup final against Knighton Town on Saturday at Cae Baker.
