ABERYSTWYTH University picked up their first point of the new year in the Spar Mid Wales League division two with a 2-2 draw at home to Dolgellau.

In the only second division game to survive the heavy frost, the draw was enough to edge the Aber students up a couple of places into ninth position.

Having been two goals up with an hour played, however, they were disappointed to have missed out on all three points, with the visitors bagging a late leveller with a disputed penalty.

An even first half saw the university lead at the break through an own goal, when Charlie Misell’s cross from the right was deflected into the net.

The hosts doubled their lead on the hour when Liam Powell broke down the right to cross for Ali Palmer to head home.

Hopes of a win, however, were dashed as third-placed Dolgellau hit back, the first with a low strike by Nathan Thomas that bobbled into the net, after a free kick had been blocked, before salvaging a share of the spoils with a penalty by Dennis Bates just five minutes from time.

The students were due to visit Cymru Alliance side Caersws in their Central Wales Cup third round tie last night (Tuesday). The winners face a trip to Spar League division two rivals Llansantffraid Village in the next round.

The Uni’s return to league action is on Saturday at home to basement side Penybont, as they seek their first win of 2017.
