ABERYSTWYTH University’s promotion hopes in the Spar Mid Wales League division two were dealt a setback as they slipped to a 3-2 reverse away against Montgomery Town.
Second-placed Llansantffraid Village also lost 3-0 to Brecon Northcote, but the students were unable to capitalise, despite dominating for an hour.
They were two goals up at half-time through Liam Powell and Matthew Roberts, and also had a goal disallowed, before Montgomery turned the game around in the second half.
Goals from James Coleman and Rob Hartshorn restored parity, before a last minute winner from Sam Davies snatched the points for the home side.
It was the second week running that the students had squandered a golden position when, having been 4-1 up to Abermule in the ER Jenkins Cup, they went down 5-4 after extra time.
Still third in the table, the students trail Llansantffraid by six points and have played two games more, and they will want to get back to winning ways at Dyffryn Banw on Saturday.
With division two leaders Builth Wells in Central Wales Cup action, Llansantffraid had missed a chance to move top of the table in their 3-0 defeat to in-form Brecon Northcote.
Craig Evans had opened the scoring for the visitors from close range, following a corner, and Jordan Ingram doubled their lead before the break.
There was no way back for the Saints in difficult playing conditions in the second half, and in-form Brecon sealed the points when Evans slotted his second goal with 10 minutes left.
Hay St Mary’s meanwhile saw their winning run come to end when they went down 4-2 at home to Abermule.
The Saints had equalised twice through young Saints striker Matty Tong, who turned the ball home from a tight angle, and captain Chris Preece who headed home from a free kick to make it all square at 2-2 at one stage.
Goals from Sam Hamer, Jack Clare and Will Denham, however, kept Mule’s noses in front, and as the Saints pressed for a third equaliser, the visitors secured their win in stoppage time when experienced substitute Nick Mumby ran through and fired a low shot past keeper Jordan Bailey.
Goals from Alwyn Jones and James Vaughan earned Dyffryn Banw a 2-0 win at basement side Penybont, whilst a Lyndon Jones goal earned Newbridge a 1-1 draw with Presteigne, who scored through Rory Hackett.
