ABERYSTWYTH University downed leaders Borth United 3-0 with a performance that they hope will boost their prospects of climbing the Spar Mid Wales League division two this term.
The Aber students showed their credentials as three goals in a 10 minute spell in the second half secured their second league win of the season, and their third victory in all competitions.
“We showed our class, and they did not look like a side 22 points higher than us before the game,” said delighted team boss Sean Fahey.
Borth, however, had started brightly at a sunny Vicarage Fields and Ben Byrne weaved his way into the box, but his shot narrowly miss the post.
Spar Mid Wales League Division Two Player of the Month for October, Ryan Davies, then saw a shot hit the crossbar, and as the visitors put pressure on the Uni defence Liam Lewis’s volley hit the inside of the post, before being cleared.
The University were foiled by one good save on the goaline, but despite some half chances for both teams it remained goalless at the interval.
Borth started the second half strongly with Ryan Davies’ rasping shot being turned away for a corner kick - but three goals in a 10 minute spell early in the second half turned the game.
Shaun Roberts broke the deadlock seven minutes after the restart when heading in a corner.
George Jenkins then fired the goal of the game moments later when cutting in from the left and smashing his angled shot into the net off the bar.
Henry Nicholson then nodded in a scrambled goal after a corner to effectively settle the result, and boost hopes of moving into the top half.
The Uni defence did well to contain the visitors thereafter, and among several notable displays, defender Owen Whitmore was a standout performer with an assured all-round display.
Aberystwyth University produced another positive performance the following day against Kerry, but were unable to prevent their hosts from moving top of the table with a 2-1 win.
Two goals in five second half minutes from Daryl McWatt and Mark Hughes were enough to secure an important three points for the Lambs, but they were left handing on at the end, with George Taylor scoring for the University.
Dolgellau consolidated their top-three position in the Spar Mid Wales League division two as they registered a hard-earned 3-0 win against a depleted Abermule side, to keep them on the tails of frontrunners Kerry and Borth United.
Mule had arrived with a bare squad of 11 players, and it was Dolgellau who opened the scoring when a David Edwards corner to the far post the ball was deflected across the box, and Jon Sutton found the corner of the net from close in.
Two minutes later the lead was doubled as a clearance from keeper Lewis Jones was headed forward by Sutton to Dennis Bates, and his pin-point pass sent Dominic Thomas clear to run on and fire low and hard to the far corner of the net.
For Abermule, Stephens fired just over from a tight angle, and Rowlands hit the bar, but at the other end Bates set up Thomas, who rounded the keeper, only to see the ball cleared for a corner.
In the second half, Thomas had an effort cleared off the goal-line, and also had appeals for a penalty waved away - but he was given his marching orders when he was shown a second yellow card for his reactions to two cynical challenges.
Ten-man Dolgellau, however, sealed the points on 80 minutes, when a Sutton free kick was spilled, and Keith Morris scored the third goal.
Elsewhere two goals by Andrew Green and singles from Joe Haycock Max Mclaughlin and Omer Ali Bozdag earned Churchstoke a solid 5-2 home triumph against Presteigne.
A brace from Aeron Powell earned Newbridge a 2-1 win over Four Crosses, and Llansantffraid Village registered a 4-0 win against Builth Wells.
