ANOTHER solid defensive performance laid the foundation for Aberystwyth Town’s second win from three successive away matches - and the Seasiders will travel to face Rhyl in confident mood tonight (Wednesday, 7.45pm).

Local lad Jonathan Evans stepped off the substitutes’ bench to score a dramatic injury-time winner at Llandudno, as Aber moved up to fourth position in the early Dafabet Welsh Premier League table.

After back-to-back away wins over Airbus UK Broughton and Llandudno, manager Matthew Bishop is looking for more of the same at the Corbett Sports Stadium.

“I thought we did very well in spells today,” said the Aber boss after their 1-0 win at Llandudno on Sunday.

“We used the ball really well, and probably needed to be better in the final third. On another day, if we had taken our chances we could have got something a bit earlier but I’m delighted with the win.”

Bishop could take plenty of heart from the fact that the three substitutes that he brought on for Aberystwyth also had an impact on the final outcome against Llandudno.

“I’ve said all the way it’s a squad game, and we proved that today with the substitutions,” he said.

“It’s something we’ve spoken about in training, and luckily, Jonny’s taken his chance, and it was a very big three points for us today.”

Back-to-back clean sheets away from home have earned Aber’s back four and keeper the plaudits, but the Aber manager also praised his midfield for the hard work they had put in to protect his defence.

“That’s two and a half games we’ve gone now without conceding. I thought the back four were immense, as well as keeper Dom (Richards),” said the Aber boss.

“But as well as that, full credit to Sherbs (Luke Sherbon) and Clarkey (Joe Clarke) in midfield, along with the rest of the team.

“It’s about putting a shift in, not just what you do with the ball but what you do without it. We’ve got a strong group who want to work hard and don’t like conceding.”

The Seasiders’ challenging run of 10 successive matches away from home continues tonight (Wednesday) against Rhyl, who will be determined to bounce back from their 10-0 hammering at the hands on The New Saints last weekend.

The Lilywhites are still on the lookout for their first win of the season, and Bishop maintained that they could still be very dangerous opposition for his team.

“We’ll do our preparation like we do for any other game. They’ve got their threats,” said Bishop.

“They’ve just signed Carl Lamb, who we know well at the football club and is a threat. The important thing is that we go there in confident mood, but do not take anything for granted. We need to do a job and get the result we want.”

With the pitch developments taking shape at Park Avenue, Aber will be back on the road on Saturday when they travel to play Bangor City, who will be in confident mood after their win over Bala.

The competition for places is hotting up in the Aber squad, with Kurtis March, Lewis Coyle and Jonathan Evans pushing for places.

“The result was the most important thing for us,” said former Penrhyncoch man Evans, after scoring the winning goal last weekend.

“It was nice to get the winner, but it’s all about the team at the end of the day. Bish told me when I came on to work hard and try and get a goal if I can, and hopefully I gave him something to think about.”

Aber will also be boosted by the returning Kostya Georgiesvky, who returns to the squad having served his three-match suspension after a sending off for Port Talbot at the end of last season.

With the rest of the squad coming through Sunday’s game unscathed, Bishop has a full squad at his disposal for the first time in this campaign.
