ABERYSTWYTH University could take positives despite slipping to a 3-0 home loss to early leaders Builth Wells in their first action in the Spar Mid Wales League division two last weekend.
Starting the season so late is always tough for the students, and a lack of match fitness proved to be the main difference in their opening league game.
“We played well in spells, but in the end a lack of match fitness cost us,” said University captain Sean Fahey.
“In the last 20 minutes we tired, but we’ll be working hard on our fitness.”
The Aberystwyth students started well, with Liam Powell having a shot cleared off the line, while Shaun Roberts also put an effort past the post.
Builth, however, got their noses in front on 10 minutes when Charlie Boucher was brought down in the penalty box and Shane Claridge slotted home the resulting penalty.
Josh Price then netted their second goal just before the interval, as Builth showed their determination to bounce back from two successive defeats.
The Uni, who have now lost the free-scoring Rian Devlin, could find goals harder to come by this season.
They had chances to reduce the arrears just before half time when Tom Spicer fired against the bar from close in, and they kept battling after the interval - before they ran out of steam.
Josh Price got his second goal five minutes before the final whistle with a good run and finish to keep the Wellmen one point clear at the top.
Ryan Davies scored four goals as Borth United remained hot on the heels of the leaders with a convincing 5-0 win at Penybont last weekend.
Looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season, Borth opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Ryan Davies’ curling free kick found its way into the bottom corner of the net.
Immediately after Davies was put through on goal, only to see his shot hit the post, but in the next attack he wasn’t to be denied his second goal as he evaded the Penybont defence and placed a neat shot past the keeper.
Davies completed his deserved hattrick just moments later with a sublime lob over the keeper into the empty net for a 3-0 lead at the interval.
Penybont, still looking for their first win, didn’t let their heads drop, but Borth’s defence and the safe handling of keeper Sean Gates denied them.
In the final quarter of the match Liam Lewis scored with a cool finish from a Ryan Davies pass, and then the two strikers combined soon afterwards, with Lewis passing for Davies to score his fourth goal of the afternoon, for a comprehensive away win.
Kerry, having beat leaders Builth Wells the previous week, kept up the pressure on with a 3-1 success at Four Crosses, with Luke Mumford, Luke Vickers and Ian Probert scoring.
Josh Biggs had given Crosses the lead at a rain-lashed Foxen Manor, but the young hosts could not match a more physical and talented Kerry.
Churchstoke beat visitors Newbridge for the second time this season, though this time in convincing fashion as four goals from Andrew Green capped a 9-3 win. Max Mclaughlin and Omer Bozdag both scored twice and Joe Haycock also found the net.
Elsewhere Nathan Prodger scored the only goal as Llansantffraid Village beat Dyffryn Banw 1-0 at home.
