ABERYSTWYTH Town’s destiny is in their own hands, after they moved to the top of the Welsh Premier Play-Off Conference with a fourth successive win.
A 3-2 victory over relegated Llanelli at Park Avenue on Friday took them one point clear of Cardiff Metropolitan University, who slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Cefn Druids.
With three games to go, the Seasiders are now in pole position in the race for the play-offs, as they prepare to take on Cefn Druids under the lights at Park Avenue on Friday (ko 7.45pm).
Aber will then travel to face Cardiff Met in crucial showdown on Easter Saturday, before their final game away at Carmarthen on 26 April.
The Seasiders will be targeting maximum points from their final home fixture, but they are also fully aware that Druids have beaten them three times this season.
“If we win our remaining games we are in the play-offs, and we’ve got enough in our team to win these matches,” said assistant manager Gavin Allen.
“Cefn Druids at home is going to be a huge game for us, and they are one of the one of the teams we haven’t managed to beat yet this season. They did us a favour against Cardiff Met, but we will need to be on form if we are to get the three points.”
Aber had to survive a spirited comeback against a Llanelli side that fought back after going three goals down.
Allen, however, could take heart from another hard-fought win, to stay on track for the play-offs for Europe.
“They scored their second goal and were trying to push, but we’ve ground out another three points,” said Allen. “It wasn’t pretty in the end, but I’ve got to be honest, it’s all about getting the points.
“Fair play to Llanelli, they’ve done well, and have put a lot of pressure on us.
“We never expected to be three goals up 10 minutes into the second half, and we relaxed a bit and didn’t move the ball quickly enough.Nev (Powell) commented that last year maybe it would have ended 3-3, but we held on for another three points.”
Aberystwyth had received news last week that the Club had been awarded Uefa European and Tier One domestic licences for next season.
The domestic licence is required for admittance into the Welsh Premier, while the Uefa Licence qualifies for them for European competition - should the team make it through the play-offs.
“These awards accredit hundreds of hours of sterling work carried out by club volunteers,” said Club licensing officer Thomas Crockett.
“I would like to publicly thank Donald Kane, Tony Bates, David Evans, Dr Richard Edwards and Jimmy Edwards in particular for their significant contributions to the process this season.”
Meanwhile Aberystwyth Town’s talented Under-19s secured the Welsh Premier Development (South) title for a second successive season on Monday with a 1-0 win in their penultimate game away at Haverfordwest.
“I’m very proud of the entire squad, it’s reward for all their hard work throughout the season,” said Under-19s manager Bari Morgan, whose side complete their league campaign at home to Risca United on Sunday.
“It’s a great achievement in securing back-to-back titles, and we’ve got still two finals to now look forward to, so the hard work continues.”
Aberystwyth Town Ladies took another step towards the South Wales Women’s League title with a 2-0 win at Caldicot, and they take on Splott Albion at Aberystwyth University’s 3G on Sunday.
For their final home JD Welsh Premier League match of 2018/9, the Club has reduced admission prices for the Cefn Druids match on Friday night to £5 for adults, and free for Under 16s. Prior to kick-off Aber Town’s triumphant Black and Green Under 19s side will be presented with the Welsh Premier Development League (South) Trophy they won on Monday evening at Haverfordwest.
