Aberystwyth-born Lowri Walker has made the fourth round of the FA Cup with Wolves Ladies, who produced a stunning performance to overcome Watford.
As the lowest ranked side remaining in the competition which continues on Sunday, fourth tier Wolves provided the shock of the third round as they knocked out a Watford side which was top of the third tier Women’s Southern Premier before the season was declared null and void.
Wolves are through to the fourth round for the first time since 2006/07 and face Blackburn in the next round on Sunday.
Dan McNamara’s players made a fast start with Jade Cross putting them into an early lead, after good work by Walker who started a quick break by winning the ball back in the middle of the park.
Watford were back on level terms on the stroke of half time courtesy of Katie O’Leary, but the visitors were not to be denied and continued to be a powerful force in the second period with goals by Kelly Darby, Anna Morphet and Jamila Palmer.
Former Wolverhampton University student Walker captained the university women’s football team in the last two years of her degree course, leading them in her final season to a promotion and BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Cup double.
As well as turning out for the university team Walker was also involved in club football, her playing career having started out as a youngster playing weekly for Bow Street Boys and in tournaments for Aberystwyth Town Girls.
She has also represented Shrewsbury Town and then Aston Villa, the journeys from Aberystwyth to each of those clubs proving as demanding as training and playing.
She is now in her third season at Wolves after the first two seasons ended in disappointment, just missing out on the National League Division 1 Midlands title and promotion in 2018/19 and then suffering the devastation of last term’s null and voiding due to Covid-19 when promotion was all but wrapped up.
