ABERYSTWYTH Town produced a dominant display to book their place in the Nathaniel MG Cup semi-finals for the first time in nine years with a solid 3-0 win at Carmarthen on Tuesday evening.

Matthew Jones, who has scored in every round, opened their account with a penalty before the interval - and an own goal by Greg Walters and a Joe Phillips strike won it for the men in green.

The Seasiders, unbeaten in four games, had started well on a chilly evening at Richmond Park, looking very composed and enjoying most of the possession.

Paulo Mendes put in a promising cross, but the returning Geoff Kellaway couldn’t quite connect, and then minutes later Kellaway unleashed a superb shot from the edge of the area, but Lee Idzi produced a big save in Carmarthen’s goal.

Edmilson Vaz, who had also been promoted to the starting side, was the next to threaten for Aber, sending a shot past the post, whilst at the other end Liam Thomas hit the post from an offside position.

With Wes Baynes, Lee Jenkins and Adam Hughes all impressing at the back, Aber had a strong base to work from, and Mendes was next to fire in from 30 yards, but home custodian Idzi saved again.

Phillips was then also denied by home keeper Idzi after unleashing a low drive, whilst for Carmarthen, former Seasider Declan Carroll fired over the bar after making a strong run.

The Seasiders finally got the lead they deserved when young defender Jenkins played Baynes into the penalty box, and his run was blocked by Chris Jones, to earn Matthew Bishop’s men a penalty.

Having converted a crucial last-minute penalty against Connah’s Quay four days earlier, Jones once again stepped up, and he coolly smashed home the spot kick, to put Aber in charge at the half-time break.

Carroll again threatened at the start of the second half with a shot with flashed over, but normal service resumed as Jones played in livewire Alex Boss, who snuck in at the near post to win a corner.

Baynes then got another assist as his ball into the box from the right was deflected past his own keeper by the unfortunate Walters, and the visitors were in control.

Keeper Connor Roberts came out swiftly to deny Carmarthen’s Liam Thomas a response, and he went on to secure Aber’s second clean sheet in three matches.

Jenkins then went on a buccaneering run down the middle, before feeding Boss, who drifted a shot narrowly over, and Kellaway set up Phillips, whose effort was again saved by the home keeper.

Then three-quarters through the game quarter-back Ryan Edwards picked out Phillips with a brilliant through ball, and he homed in before nudging the ball sweetly past Idzi for Aber’s third goal.

With 25 minutes left, it already looked game, set and match, but Chris Jones volleyed a rare Carmarthen attempt wide, and Roberts prevented an own goal with another great stop after Carroll’s cross.

With the Seasiderds bossing possession, and in full control, final chances came to young substitute Richy Ricketts and Alex Boss as the visitors marched on into the last four with a thoroughly deserved win.
