ABERYSTWYTH Town Football Club has revealed that work on a new 3G synthetic playing surface at Park Avenue is set to begin as early as May 2016.

Completion of the sale of land to Tai Ceredigion has been effected today (Friday), meaning that the 3G Project will 'definitely' go ahead this summer.

The sale - leading to the construction of 33 Tai Ceredigion flats on the current Astroturf training pitch - will facilitate the club’s own financial contribution to the project, which is otherwise funded via the FAWs ’Project 3G’ scheme.

A club statement said: "The Club has been careful not to comment unnecessarily on the development until today, so as not to prejudice any negotiations with the numerous project partners.

"The completion of the sale today means the final hurdle in a long and drawn out process, which has taken almost three years to complete, has now finally been overcome.

"The Club’s Directors would like to publicly thank Chairman Tony Bates for his tireless work, which has turned a ’blue sky’ scheme into a reality."

The 33 flats will be built on the small training area behind the enclosure next to the main stand, and the scheme is much smaller than the original £13m development that would have seen more than 80 flats built, along with a new stand, clubhouse and associated facilities.

With the news last month that Bala Town had also received funding for a new 3G pitch this summer, Aberystwyth will become the sixth Welsh Premier club to play on a synthetic surface.
