ABERYSTWYTH’S Lowri Walker is dreaming of FA Cup glory as Wolves Women face their biggest test to date on Sunday.
As the lowest ranked side remaining in the competition, FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands side Wolves provided the shock of the third round when they knocked out tier three opponents Watford with a comprehensive 4-1 win at the weekend.
But an even tougher test awaits them when they face Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers Ladies for the fourth-round clash at AFC Telford on Sunday (3pm kick-off).
Lowri said: “We know Blackburn will be our toughest test yet as a championship side, they have worked hard to get into that league over the last couple of years and have gained some great players.
“But we have absolutely nothing to lose, no pressure on us, we will just go out there and do what we do best as Wolves Women.
“We’ve worked hard all week and everyone is looking forward to the occasion.
“It’s a shame we still can’t have our fans, friends and families in the stadium but we will hopefully be making everyone proud at home.
“This will be our biggest game in a Wolves shirt, all of our frustrations from the last two seasons can come to play in a positive way through heart and desire, and I think that will really show when we are on the pitch together.
“I think we can cause an upset, it’s the magic of the cup!”
Former Wolverhampton University student Walker captained the university women’s football team in the last two years of her degree course, leading them in her final season to a promotion and BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Cup double.
As well as turning out for the university team Walker was also involved in club football, her playing career having started out as a youngster playing weekly for Bow Street Boys and in tournaments for Aberystwyth Town Girls.
She has also represented Shrewsbury Town and then Aston Villa, the journeys from Aberystwyth to each of those clubs proving as demanding as training and playing.
She is now in her third season at Wolves after the first two seasons ended in disappointment, just missing out on the National League Division 1 Midlands title and promotion in 2018/19 and then suffering the devastation of last term’s null and voiding due to Covid-19 when promotion was all but wrapped up.
Looking back on the Watford victory Lowri added: “It was a fantastic team performance against Watford, the whole group put in 110 per cent on and off the field.
“Credit to Watford because they are a great side but we just wanted it more, we were ruthless in our attacking play and ended up putting four past them.
“The buzz around the group was amazing but nobody was shocked, we know what we are capable of and we should be playing teams like that week in week out.
“The direction of this club is only up from here. And it’s a pleasure to be on the journey.”
