ABERYSTWYTH Town’s up and down season continued with a 2-1 defeat to last season’s Cymru Alliance champions Airbus UK Broughton at Park Avenue.
Kristian Platt opened the scoring for the visitors with a 16th minute free kick, before Andy Owens doubled the lead on 47 - and despite Luke Boundford reducing the arrears with nine minutes top go, the Wingmakers held on for their first win.
After a minute’s silence for Aberystwyth Town legend Bryan Pugh Jones, a high tempo first phase was decided in Airbus’ favour when the gangly Owens won a free kick 30 yards out, and Platt’s quality strike flew into the far corner.
Owens was played through and skewed wide from a good position, before Aber attacked with a dangerous Boundford cross caught by keeper Dave Roberts.
Alex Darlington was denied by Connor Roberts in Aber’s goal, but Wes Baynes’ ball in just evaded Matthew Jones, and Paulo Mendes’ back post header from a Boundford cross was held by Roberts.
Baynes saw a shot deflected wide as Aber tried to respond, but then Darlington missed a great chance from the edge of the penalty box to double the lead.
Impressive left wing back Curtis Strong then played in Owens, but a superb last ditch tackle from Stuart Jones denied him, and with Wollacott then Jones making further headed clearances Airbus were good value for their interval lead.
Hopes of a second half comeback were dashed as Ryan Edwards crossed for the irrepressible Owens to claim Airbus’ second goal just two minutes after the break, and Aber were now really up against it.
Baynes’ cross was caught by Roberts, and Boundford scooped wide, before Owens drew a save at the other end. Aber’s Ryan Edwards then had a shot deflected for a corner, but Owens again went close for Airbus and Platt tested Connor Roberts’ hands with a free kick.
Baynes picked out Stuart Jones with a free kick, but his header went wide, but Owens was denied by Roberts again from point blank range with a brilliant save.
A spirited Aber ended the game strongly, and Adam Hughes sent in a great delivery from the left wing, which league top scorer Marc Williams glanced wide.
His next ball in was successful, however, as Boundford netted at his second attempt to revive hope of an unlikely point.
Their best chance came when Ryan Edwards sent in a free kick for Stuart Jones to head agonisingly wide, but Airbus held on for probably a worthy away win.
