MANAGER Gavin Allen could take plenty of heart from the way his youthful Aberystwyth Town side hit back from being a goal down to notch their first win of the Cymru Premier season on Friday.

Their 3-1 win over newcomers Flint had followed a 1-1 draw at Penybont on Tuesday evening, to leave the Seasiders with four points from three games played.

Allen said he was pleased with the charactershown by his young side so far this season, as they prepared to face mid Wales rivals Newtown at Latham Park this Friday.

“I think in the first half we had about 20 minutes where we weren’t really on it, but for the rest of the game we created so many chances, and it should probably have been a lot more,” Allen said.

“It shows the character of the boys we have got, obviously they’re still young and are learning their trade, but I was pleased with the intensity, and the passing at times.

“They’ve been working their socks off in training, and it’s not just their fitness that we are trying to work on, there’s the mentality and game management side of it.

“We’ll move on now to the Newtown game next week, and I’m hoping that if we can show that kind of intensity again, we’ll be hard to beat.

“We have a couple of days to look at things, but let’s not start thinking that because they have lost two games, Newtown are a bad team.

“They are a decent side, especially at Latham Park, and they’ll be solid, but we’ve got to be confident going into it.”

The Seasiders strengthened their goalkeeping options in midweek with the return of Connor Roberts on loan from The New Saints until the end of January, and he came straight into Friday’s team.

The 27-year-old re-joins Aber for a second loan spell, after impressing last season, having provided cover for Paul Harrison in the Saints’ European ties, including the loss to B36 Torshavn of the Faroe Islands on penalties.

Meanwhile it was confirmed that Mathew Jones’ dismissal at Penybont for a second yellow card was a case of mistaken identity.

“It has been considered by the Football Association of Wales, who confirmed that Louis Bradford had been cautioned in the 37th minute of the game and not Matthew Jones,” said a spokesman.

“As a result, the 82nd minute yellow card shown to him will remain on the player’s record, but the red card and resulting one match suspension has been removed.”
