Aberystwyth Town’s second pre-season work-out saw them pegged back to draw 2-2 against FAW Championship (South) outfit Llantwit Major at Park Avenue, with their visitors proving worthy opposition in a keenly-contested match.

Sean Williams’ 90th minute equaliser denied the Seasiders their second friendly win in four days, in what proved to be a competitive and entertaining encounter.

Paolo Mendes had opened the scoring for the hosts in the 11th minute, only for Harry Davies to equalise on 25 minutes, and after the break Joe Phillips’ superb strike on 55 minutes seemed to have won the game for Aber - until Williams’ last gasp effort meant honours ended even.

Llantwit had started well and Glyndwr Davies headed Kieran Garnder’s corner kick wide early on, before home keeper Oli Fairbrother was then called into action to claim a free kick from Gardner.

Aber started to settle, passing the ball around nicely, and Ryan Edwards made a telling contribution with a driving run down the middle. When he picked out Mendes, the Portuguese player skipped over a tackle and picked out the bottom corner to open the scoring with aplomb.

Edwards then saw a shot saved, but back at the other end s the Seasiders pushed forward, but Davies also brought another parried save from Fairbrother.

Aber’s Rio Ahmadi then curled an effort wide, but Llantwit got the equaliser they probably deserved when Gardner’s corner was flicked in at the near post by Davies, and the scores were level.

Ahmadi sent in a cross for a trialist to clip the crossbar with a header, and Ben Cripps sent in a brilliant shot from distance and was unlucky to see the ball rebound off the angle of the post and bar.

The impressive Mendes was at the heart of much of Aber’s positive play, spraying the ball around with aplomb, but the first period ended 1-1, which was a fair reflection of an entertaining half.

Four substitutions followed at half time for Aberystwyth, and Wes Baynes caused consternation in Llantwit’s defence with a corner, before firing just wide.Phillips, fresh off the bench, dug out a shot which screamed just wide, but minutes later another stunning volley from 30 yards from Phillips nestled into the bottom corner, and Town were looking good.

Williams spooned an effort wide from a corner for the visitors, and then Phillips - who has returned to Club this summer - drew a save from visiting keeper Jack Lansdown with another volley.

With both sides possibly easing off in to the last quarter, another Aber trialist went off on a run, before unleashing a superb volley, which was well saved.

Then at the death Glyndwr Davies’ volley was parried by replacement Aber keeper Adam Walters, and up popped Williams to ensure parity for the visitors at full time. The tough pre-season challenges keep coming, as Aber’s next friendly is a bit of a journey into the unknown this Thursday evening, away to National League (South) side Gloucester City, at Evesham United’s ground, with a 7.45pm kick off.
