ABERYSTWYTH Town made it back-to-back away wins in the JD Welsh Premier League as they ran out deserved 3-1 winners against Llanelli Town at Stebonheath on Friday night.
An early Paulo Mendes goal was quickly cancelled out by Terry McCormick’s own goal, but Ryan Wollacott gave the Seasiders a half-time lead.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men, with Mendes and Anthony Finselbach both being shown second yellow cards, but Geoff Kellaway’s late strike secured a well-deserved three points.
With many of Aber’s players facing lengthy travel delays, kick off was delayed until 7:55pm, but Nev Powell’s side were quick out of the blocks.
Midfielder Mendes collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area, before rounding Llanelli ‘keeper Oliver Davies and sliding the ball into the empty net to make it 1-0 after just 3 minutes.
Just two minutes later, however, keeper McCormick came to meet a corner in the crowded penalty area, but the ball ricocheted into the net.
Mendes went into the book for a cynical pull back on Jordan Davies, but on 20 minutes Aber’s Declan Walker earned a free kick on the edge of the box, and Mathew Jones fired into the wall, before seeing his curling second effort clip the crossbar on its way over.
Walker was also inches away from connecting with Jones’ corner kick inside the six yard area - but on 40 minutes they were handed a fantastic opportunity when Ryan Edwards was tripped in the box by Anthony Nelson.
Referee Nick Pratt pointed to the penalty spot, but Aber skipper Walker slipped on his approach and home keeper Oliver Davies was able to save.
Just 90 seconds later, however, Mathew Jones whipped in a corner kick into the penalty area, and Wollacott was on hand to head the ball into the bottom corner and make it 2-1.
The Seasiders were dealt a major blow when midfield man Mendes slid in a fraction too late and was shown a second yellow card, but they very nearly extended their lead when Joe Phillips knocked the ball back for Ash Ruane, who’s shot was blocked at the last second by ex-Seasider Dan Alfei.
On 63 minutes, another former Aber man, Finselbach slid in on Joe Phillips and received his second yellow card, and from there on, Aber took control.
Joe Phillips stung the palms of keeper Davies, before he made way for substitute Kellaway, and on 80 minutes, Ash Ruane was played through by Walker, only to be denied by the outstretched hand of keeper Davies.
Walker’s shot was somehow blocked on the goal line by Carlos Indja, but in stoppage time Kellaway was played through by Walker and he clinically slotted home to secure the points.
