PWLLHELI’S concerns at being near the Welsh Alliance’s division one relegation zone deepened as Barry Evans’ side followed up a 4-1 defeat at Llandudno Albion on Thursday, with a 2-1 reverse against Llandyrnog last weekend.

Mark Jones had cancelled out Daniel Evans’ opening goal for Albion in midweek, but the home side took the spoils, courtesy of their second half goals from Bryan Roberts, Evans and Connor Davies.

On Saturday, Llandyrnog scored first through Shaun James on 11 minutes, and they hit the home woodwork twice, before Geoff Jones doubled the lead on 67.

Pwllheli clawed back a reply from Jamie Underwood with a close range finish on 70 minutes, and the hosts went close to conjuring up an equaliser in the frantic late stages, with Mark Jones heading just over the bar from a corner, whilst two other attempts flew close to the target.

Penrhyndeudraeth, who have appointed Gareth Piercy as interim boss, following Julian Jeffery’s departure, put up a sterling show before eventually succumbing at Llandudno Albion by the only goal.

Dan Evans was Albion’s match winner after 72 minutes, to compound Penrhyn’s woes, with just one win over 13 league and cup matches since early October.

Barmouth and Dyffryn United were left kicking their heels again, when their Welsh Alliance fixture at Llangefni was called off, due to a waterlogged pitch.

Carl Ryan’s team can now focus on their ongoing Mawddach Cup glory quest, and this Saturday’s delayed second round home tie with holders Llanrug United.

Llanrug were also frustrated by a match postponement last weekend, when they were denied a visit to Llanberis, because of an unfit pitch at Ffordd Padarn.

The Mawddach Cup tie winners will play away in round three against either Llanrwst United or Greenfield, who will also meet in a rearranged tie on Saturday.

Llanrwst were in league action last Saturday, winning at St Asaph City 4-1, thanks to Meyrick Knight netting on 24 and 32 minutes, Luke Roberts on 48 and captain Leighton Griffiths on 67, with the hosts’ Josh Taylor replying on 63.
