AFTER a bright start to their campaign, Aberystwyth University suffered two defeats in a week in the Spar Mid Wales League division two.
The students crushed Penybont 13-1 in their first outing of the season, but were edged out 2-1 at Llansantffraid Village in an even game in midweek.
Goals by Nathan Prodger and Tom Gale earned the Saints their win, with Owain ap Gareth pulling a goal back.
The students then welcomed leaders Builth Wells to Vicarage Field on Saturday, and the visitors ran out 3-0 winners in rain-drenched conditions.
Richie Powell scored twice and Josh Price once in a game that was almost called off due to the saturated pitch.
The University had their chances in the first period through Liam Powell and Tom Spicer, but Builth had carved a one goal lead at the break.
With conditions deteriorating in the second period, the visitors struck twice more following defensive slips to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, with five wins and a draw.
Hay St Mary’s notched their third win with a 3-1 verdict against Talgarth Town, having made the perfect start when veteran striker Kevin Jones saw his looping header beat keeper Martin Norwood after jus two minutes.
Youngster Darren Horrigan hit a curling left foot 20 yard strike into the top corner of the net for 2-0, but Talgarth hit back in the 20th minute when Chris Preece was penalised for a handball in the box and striker Kyle O’Shea scored from the penalty spot.
The Saints pushed forward and a quickly taken Will Goodwin throw found Matty Tong, who turned on the edge of the box and shot from 20 yards into the left corner of the net.
The second half was closely contested, but there was a late scare for Hay as Tom Bevan tipped a Ben Sharmen effort onto the bar, and O’Shea headed over with the goal at his mercy.
Nathan Prodger continued his scoring form as unbeaten Llansantffraid Village notched their third win with a 5-1 win over Penybont, with Wayne Austin also scoring. George McCarthy-Allen scored for Penybont.
Craig Evans scored a hat-trick as Brecon Northcote beat Abermule 5-0 at home, with Corey Evans also getting his name on the scoresheet, along with Joel Evans from the penalty spot.
Twm Foulkes netted a hat-trick as Dyffryn Banw notched a 5-4 win away against Newbridge-on-Wye, with Rhodri Davies and Harri Evans also finding the net for the visitors.
Alfie Stonefield had opened Newbridge’s account, with further goals scored by Ryan Lawrence and Aeron Powell, who also converted a penalty.
