WITH only a few hours to go before Wales launch their Euro 2020 Group A campaign Rob Page’s men will be hoping to produce a similar result to the last time they faced the Swiss.

That was back in 2011 when Cymru secured a 2-0 at the Liberty Stadium in a Euro qualifier.

Captain Aaron Ramsey opened the scoring from the penalty spot on the hour mark, before Gareth Bale added a second on 71 minutes as Gary Speed’s side registered their second win of the campaign.

Their only other win against Switzerland came 60 years earlier on 16 May, 1951 in a friendly at Wrexham, Trevor Ford netting twice for the hosts and Ron Burgess adding a third with replies by Charles Antenen and Robert Ballaman.

Wales talisman Gareth Bale is confident that the Red Dragons - who have Aberystwyth’s Rhys Norrington-Davies and Neco Williams, who has strong family connections with the town of Porthmadog - in the squad, can do well when they take on Switzerland at Baku Olympic Stadium at 2pm today.

Giving an interview at Wales’ training camp at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican stadium, the 31-year-old stressed the importance of getting off to a good start.

The captain said: “All we are worried about is what we do on the pitch, what we can affect. We will just be concentrating on our performance and hopefully that is good enough on the day. We want to win, we want to get off to a good start. I don’t think it’s a case of we can’t lose the game.

"But we are going in with the mentality of wanting to win, get off to a good start and put ourselves in a great position. In our minds, we have a game plan, we want to win and that’s what we will be going onto the pitch to do."

Joe Allen is also upbeat about Wales’ chances of progressing from the group stages, citing the influence the new generation of Welsh players that have come through the ranks can make.

The midfielder said: “They want to make their mark and show what they can do and showcase their talent.

"That is one of the great strengths they have. They are fearless. They are hungry and ambitious to do well and they are really, really keen to show that, and I am confident they are going to do just that as well.

"I think technically throughout the whole squad I think there is a bit more flair, a bit more creativity and a few more attacking dimensions.

“I think we have players with pace, we have players who can find a pass and can create things out of nothing. We have different traits this time around and I think everyone is looking forward to showing what we can do in maybe a different way."
