BARMOUTH and Dyffryn United looked worthy winners against first-time opponents Llanerchymedd in the Mawddach Cup as they notched a 3-1 home win.
The Wern Mynach hosts, now with Paul Lewis as player-manager, and Dave Harding as his assistant, delayed their real impact until the final quarter, when they netted three goals in 10 minutes.
In a quiet first half, played in incessant rain and a strong wind, neither side hinted at scoring, although Jake Jones produced one decent shot, which was turned around a post by the visiting keeper.
The stalemate continued for a good while after the resumption, with Barmouth shaping as more likely to achieve the breakthrough, and then suddenly they delivered in tremendous fashion.
With 72 minutes played, Bobby Griffiths moved off the subs’ bench to make a return debut, after a four-year absence through injury, and his first touch virtually on the goal-line, was to prod home.
Player-boss Lewis had been the provider of that chance and the influential midfielder then set up Shane Jones for his goal on 74 minutes, skipping around the keeper and slotting into an empty net.
It was fitting that match star Lewis got on the score-sheet himself, with Barmouth’s third goal on 82 minutes, before the spirited losers derived some consolation with Lewis Connor’s headed reply.
Penrhyndeudraeth were knocked out by Holyhead Town, last season’s Gwynedd League champions and now a Welsh Alliance division two bottom-half side, who snatched a 2-1 win at Maes-y-Parc.
In the wind and rain just one goal was managed in the first half, by Holyhead’s Gary Owen after only eight minutes.
Penrhyn, who have an impressive pedigree in this particular competition, as the cup winners in 2016 and finalists in 2013, gained a glimmer of hope as Meilir Williams converted a penalty on 73 minutes.
Barely three minutes later, however, Holyhead’s Tom Roberts scored the deciding goal, and Penrhyn failed to reply.
Holders Llandudno Albion are through to the second round, after getting the better of Nantlle Vale by a 3-2 score, with the winning goal coming from Adam Hold five minutes from the final whistle.
Nantlle secured the only goal of the first half, through Matthew Owen on three minutes, and their other strike was Luke Williams’ penalty on 69, but Albion’s Lee Thomas landed a double on 50 and 67 minutes, ahead of the hosts’ late winner.
In the highest scoring tie of the round, Mynydd Llandygai beat Amlwch Town 7-3 in the 90 minutes, after having trailed 2-3 at half-time, and then they blasted five goals in a stirring second period.
Mynydd’s score-sheet featured Gwyn Roberts on 15 minutes, Andy Barker on 21 and 85, Jamie Whitmore on 60 and 72, Iwan Morris on 68 and Dylan Jones on 85.
Amlwch gained their goals from Adam Taylor on 18 minutes, Martin Byast on 33 and Owain Rowlands on 45 minutes.
League leaders Llangefni Town beat Llanberis 3-1 at their Talwrn Road home, with goals from Liam Morris on three and 72 minutes and an own-goal on 37, whereas the losers had struck early through Terry Saynor on eight minutes.
The other ties all produced home winners, with Kinmel Bay winning 4-3 against Glan Conwy, Mochdre Sports 5-3 over Meliden, Penmaenmawr Phoenix 3-1 over Greenfield, Pentraeth 2-1 after extra-time against Felinheli, and St Asaph City triumphed 2-1 against Gaerwen.
Pwllheli’s ambitions to achieve a league and cup double in the Welsh Alliance division two were shattered in a 4-1 defeat away against Llannefydd in the Take Stock Van Hire Cup’s first round.
It was the second time that Ben Ogilvey’s team had been reduced to second best by these particular opponents, having slipped up 3-2 at home at the Recreation Ground in a league clash in September in their only other defeat so far this season.
Pwllheli had hoped for a better outcome in the away return, especially when they led through Ifan Roberts’ goal on 25 minutes, and that slender 1-0 situation was maintained until the hosts inflicted a second half blitz.
Llannefydd’s equaliser on 54 minutes from Tomos Jones was followed by a triple whammy of goals between the 70th and 80th minutes, contributed by Ed Jones, Jared Jones and Tomos Jones with his second.
Llandyrnog United were in Welsh Alliance division one action and did well in their second-from-bottom versus second-from-top challenge, by beating Bodedern Athletic 1-0, courtesy of Shaun Davies’ goal on 25 minutes.
• Porthmadog Reserves made it a perfect 10 with a 5-0 defeat of Llangefni Town in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Reserves Division.
Cai Henshaw showed the way with an 11-minute opener and went on to enjoy a burst of scoring leading up to the interval as Rhys Hughes and Dion Roberts joined in to make it 4-0.
In the second period Llangefni kept the young Port team to just one further goal, with Math Roberts netting directly from free kick to make the final score 5-0.
Denbigh Town Reserves beat Penmaenmawr Phoeniox 4-0, with goals from Paul Wiliams on 19 and 52 minutes, Billy Holmes on 27 and Stuart Vernon after 58.
Prestatyn Reserves beat Colwyn Bay Reserves 2-1, with Matthew Griffriths and Macaulay Taylor cancelling out James Hobson’s opener.
