TWO goals a quarter-of-an-hour apart in the first half killed off Barmouth and Dyffryn United’s ambitions of a Welsh Cup run, as Cymru Alliance side Buckley Town set up a third round tie at home against Holywell Town.

Barmouth’s first body blow came on 27 minutes, when a penalty was awarded for a hand ball offence and Buckley’s Mike Cronshaw confidently steered the spot-kick beyond home keeper-manager Llyr Hughes.

Hughes had to retrieve the ball from the net again on 41 minutes, when Staige Davies applied a firm close range header after good work on the wing and a cross by George Ukaegbu.

Barmouth had acquitted themselves well and defended competently, with Carwyn Jones marshalling the back division, with support from Rob Murfet and Chris Wilkins in midfield.

Up front Nathan Warren ploughed a lone furrow but, such was Buckley’s influence, he found the service to him was limited and Barmouth’s solitary shot came from Adam Morris.

The Wern Mynach team were trailing by those two goals at the hour, when a reply would have been a huge boost and, although Morris struck the ball well, Buckley’s Graham Owen reacted with a brilliant save.

At the other end Cronshaw had a great chance to score, and James Rumsey also missed with a header that skimmed the bar.

Barmouth continue on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and so in the meantime Llyr Hughes will continue to take on the role in a temporary capacity.
