BARMOUTH and Dyffryn United launched their new campaign in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance division one with a rousing 3-3 draw against promoted Prestatyn Sports at Wern Mynach.
The home side surged two goals in front early on through Shane Jones on four minutes and Paul Lewis on 10, even though last season’s division two champions had threatened.
Barmouth had their lead scrubbed out by Prestatyn replies from Rob Dunn, with a header from a corner on 15 minutes, and Dan Cassidy, who made the situation 2-2 close to the break.
With a quarter of an hour to go, Prestatyn’s Tom McDowell hit his side’s third goal, but Lewis came to Barmouth’s rescue with the equaliser on 81 minutes, heading in Shane Jones’ cross from the right flank.
Penrhyndeudraeth hit the ground running with a 2-0 success over division one rivals Llanrwst United.
Spectators at Maes-y-Parc had hardly settled when Alun Hughes turned the ball into the net at the back post, after an early cross by Adam Griffiths had caught the visitors flat-footed.
The crucial second goal by Penrhyn was a long way off, however, as just 10 minutes remained when Tom Smith marked his return to action with a quality 18-yard shot.
Penrhyn’s Jack Jones caught the eye with his midfield creations and Smith, who was back after taking a season out, linked up well in attack with last term’s top goal-scorer Huw Queack.
Elsewhere, promoted Bodedern Athletic, banked their first set of points by means of a lone own-goal after 62 minutes at St Asaph City.
Llangefni Town, who finished last season as the title runners-up to Conwy Borough, were held in a tense goal-less draw at Llanberis.
Llandudno Albion were the day’s most convincing winners, running up a 4-1 tally over Greenfield, thanks to Dave Maddox scoring on 11 minutes, Ricky Jones on 63, Luke Smith on 74 and Lee Ellis on 90 minutes.
Nantlle Vale beat Llandudno Junction 2-0, with goals from Gerwyn Williams on 18 minutes and Daniel Ellis on 80, while Llanrug United won 2-1 at Llandyrnog United, as Llion Jones netted on 43 and Kevin Lloyd on 73, after Luke Appleby’s home opener on 27.
Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division Two
BLAENAU Ffestiniog Amateurs got their new campaign in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance division two off on the right note as goals from Tom Hughes, Kieron Ellis and Bryn Humphreys sealed a 3-2 win at home against Llannefydd at Cae Clyd.
Before the start of this match there was a minute’s silence in memory of Sion Jarman, the club’s first aider and a loyal supporter of the Amateurs for many years.
The visitors are regarded as one of the top teams in this division, but the Quarrymen were keen to show their potential, and within four minutes Tom Hughes had opened the scoring with a neat goal.
Visiting keeper Ifan Roberts made a fabulous double save to deny Tom Hughes and then Bryn Humphreys, but it was the visitors who were rewarded for their attacking play when Tomos Hywel netted their equaliser with 23 minutes gone.
There were chances for both sides, before Keiron Ellis restored the home side’s lead after a fine move on half an hour.
Home keeper Gethin Jones made some fine saves to keep his side ahead at the break, but early in the second half keeper Roberts saved well to deny Tom Hughes.
Another fine move by Blaneau ended in Bryn Humphreys making it 3-1, but within minutes the visitors were back in the match when Tomos Jones found the net.
Roberts made two fine saves to thwart Keiron Ellis, and in the dying minutes Gethin Jones saved well from Lewis Jones to preserve the home lead to the end.
Elsewhere in division two, goals from Shaheen Ahmed and Jamie Jones ensured that Glan Conwy edged a tight 2-1 decision away against Aberffraw, after Nathan Moore had put the hosts in front.
Scott Roberts notched the only goal as Mochdre Sports came away from Gaerwen 1-0 victors, while Craig Griffiths and Andy Booker bagged Meliden a 2-1 win in a stormy encounter at Llannerchymedd, whose scorer was Chris Byast.
Julian Cleary’s long range stunner put Penmaenmawr Phoenix ahead against Y Felinheli, but Iwan Owen levelled as both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
